Ch. 21Great Harvest
Chapter Summary: “Great Harvest”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Sophia, the last surviving member of the Black Iron Squad, is thrown onto solid ground after her teammates are dragged into a swamp and killed. Grieving and furious, she blames the Dungeon, its monsters, and especially the treasure-chest monster responsible for Vic’s death.
- A Treant Guardian appears and challenges Sophia’s condemnation of the Dungeon. It argues that humans enter voluntarily and have no right to curse the Dungeon or its ruler after suffering losses.
- The Treant brutally kills Sophia, crushing her body and bringing about the complete destruction of the Black Iron Squad on the Fourth Layer.
- Lucifer collects the squad’s equipment and souls. He is especially pleased with the eight magic items recovered, including weapons, armor, clothing, and Vic’s alchemical equipment.
- Lucifer uses the strongest items to upgrade treasure chests throughout the Dungeon. Five weaker magic items from the treasury are redistributed across the First, Fourth, and Fifth Layers, improving the Dungeon’s rewards and making deeper exploration more worthwhile.
- One day later, William leads a new adventuring party through the First Layer. Despite having reached the Third Layer before, he remains extremely cautious because of the deadly experience that nearly destroyed his original group.
- William’s party discovers a treasure chest hidden high on a cavern wall. William carefully checks for danger before allowing the group to proceed.
- The nearby Puchi monsters are identified as harmless creatures that spread spores and may even trade delicious mushrooms for food. Their mushrooms have become popular ingredients in dishes sold in the growing Adventurer Town.
Character Developments
- Sophia: Her grief over her teammates turns into hatred toward the Dungeon, but her despair and anger ultimately leave her vulnerable. Her death reinforces the Dungeon’s unforgiving nature.
- The Treant Guardian: Initially speaks gently and appears kindly, but quickly reveals intense loyalty to the Dungeon’s ruler. It acts as both judge and executioner, defending the Dungeon’s authority.
- Lucifer: Treats the Black Iron Squad’s deaths as a valuable harvest rather than a tragedy. He demonstrates practical, strategic thinking by recycling their magic equipment to strengthen the Dungeon’s treasure rewards and attract more adventurers.
- William: Shows himself to be a cautious and responsible leader. His past losses have made him distrustful of appearances and determined to prevent his new party from repeating the mistakes of earlier adventurers.
- Lia and William’s party: The newer adventurers respect William’s judgment and feel reassured by his seriousness, emphasizing their trust in his leadership.
Significant Themes
- The Dungeon’s impartial cruelty: Adventurers knowingly enter a dangerous environment, and the Dungeon offers no sympathy when they die.
- Responsibility versus blame: The Treant rejects Sophia’s belief that the Dungeon is at fault, insisting that those who enter must accept the consequences.
- Death as profit and progression: Lucifer views fallen adventurers as resources, turning their deaths into stronger equipment and greater opportunities for future adventurers.
- Caution and survival: William’s approach contrasts with the Black Iron Squad’s fatal overconfidence in the supposed safety of treasure chests.
- The Dungeon as an evolving ecosystem: Monsters such as the Puchi are not all hostile; some provide useful resources, while the Dungeon’s rewards, economy, and surrounding town continue to develop.
Important Character Interactions
- Sophia confronts the Treant Guardian emotionally, blaming the Dungeon and its creations for her squad’s deaths. The Treant responds with righteous anger and kills her.
- Lucifer evaluates the Black Iron Squad’s equipment and decides how best to distribute it, showing his managerial relationship with the Dungeon and its resources.
- William instructs Lia and the rest of his party never to underestimate even the First Layer. His warning strengthens the group’s confidence in him.
- William reacts cautiously when Lia spots the treasure chest, placing himself between it and the party while inspecting the surroundings.
- The chapter ends with the party near the chest and the friendly Puchi, setting up a contrast between dangerous treasure encounters and the Dungeon’s more benign creatures.
