Background

Nile Doctor was once a priest loyal to a pharaoh before becoming a Mummy and settling in Metropolis. He later acquired permission to operate his own clinic after treating a patient connected to the powerful mental-hospital system; he describes himself as a former “ingredient” who could not otherwise have obtained a clinic permit. 433 606

The Ra-descendant community in Metropolis was nearly exterminated after a traitorous priest converted members of the lineage into Mummies and sold them to the Bloodstained Restaurant. Nile and Sesha were long believed to be the only survivors among the descendants who had migrated to the city. 154 187 His hatred of the traitor remains one of his strongest motivations.

Sesha, originally human, suffers from a condition that prevents aging while rapidly draining her vitality. Nile mummified her to slow the disease, but the transformation cost her citizenship and damaged her mind. He treats her as his daughter and is primarily concerned that she eventually regain enough sanity to live independently. 153 187

Nile operates Imhotep Clinic as a comparatively affordable and reliable alternative to Metropolis’s expensive hospitals and dangerous Black Market clinics. His methods are often grotesque, invasive, and ethically flexible, but his treatments are widely regarded as effective. 414

Appearance

Nile Doctor normally conceals his body beneath Mummy bandages and may wear priestly or pharaoh-style regalia. Beneath the wrappings, he has a desiccated undead body with exposed bones and shriveled organs covered in golden preservation incantations. 626

Personality

Nile Doctor is scholarly, proud of his status as Ra’s priest, and deeply reverent toward Ra-Atum. He is also dryly sarcastic, easily irritated by Liu Zheng’s disrespect, and fond of threatening people with Sacred Scarabs, sarcophagi, or experimental medicine. 433 481

His professional compassion is real but selective. He will take extreme measures to preserve Sesha, surviving Ra descendants, and patients he considers worth saving, yet he treats mutilation, transformation, and repurposing body parts as ordinary medical decisions. 154 465 He can be cruelly playful, as demonstrated by the treatment of his unfaithful former concubine, but he is fiercely protective if Sesha is threatened. 187 433

Despite initially treating Liu Zheng as a troublesome customer, Nile comes to trust him as a close ally. Later battles and expeditions rekindle his identity as both priest and warrior; he admits that spreading Ra’s influence and fighting alongside Liu has made him feel more fulfilled. 413 666

Imhotep Clinic and Liu Zheng’s Treatment

Nile first meets Liu Zheng when Cow-Horse refers him to Imhotep Clinic for special medical supplies. He introduces Sesha and establishes the clinic’s unsettling medical atmosphere through an unusual treatment for a pustule-covered patient. 153

Liu later proposes that Nile perform a dangerous hemorrhoid operation for Sewer in exchange for protection and a possible clinic relocation. Nile agrees largely because the arrangement could secure Sesha’s future, asking Liu to help restore her sanity if he dies. 186

Nile transforms Liu’s Irritability into Rage Incarnate, performs the surgery that implants his own brain matter into Liu, and later gives Liu access to Sunfire and Ra’s Grace. 187 188 242 476

Ra’s Lineage and the Pyramid

Nile reveals that the descendants of Ra were betrayed, mummified, and sold as ingredients. His desire to recover surviving kin motivates Liu Zheng to bid for a shrunken pyramid containing a Ra’s Altar and dormant Mummies. 187 567

The pyramid contains four Mummies, though only one remains conscious. Nile modifies the pyramid into a compact emergency relic and later retrieves powerful pharaoh equipment from its treasure chamber. 572 574 606

Bathhouse Street and the Hundred Thousand Mountains

Nile accompanies Liu Zheng through Bathhouse Street, the Sewer, and the Hundred Thousand Mountains as medic, scholar, and combat support. He refuses unrelated political missions but honors his agreements with Liu. 354 370

During the conflict with Yaksha’s Dark Elves, he demonstrates his Solar Boat technique and forces a tense truce through overwhelming solar firepower. 610

In the mountains, he duels the Snow Horse, protects the group from hostile ice techniques, and helps confront the Rootless Flowers’ corruption. 620 627

Rootless Flower Corruption

When Liu Zheng becomes mentally corrupted after consuming Rootless Flowers, Nile takes command of the emergency treatment. He sacrifices a Sacred Scarab, uses the Eye of the Sun and Ra’s Crown, exposes his own fragile Mummy body, and channels Ra-Atum’s power to burn the corruption out of Liu. 625 626

The treatment succeeds, though it consumes Nile’s bandages and leaves Liu reduced to a fraction of his former size before he recovers. 626

Expanding the Family

After recovering additional Ra-lineage survivors, Nile accepts Sesha’s growing role as Nephili’s older sister and considers Liu’s plan to establish occasional consultations at Morrison Elementary School as the foundation for a second clinic and refuge. 666
