Ch. 541Big White Goose: What Grudge, What Resentment
Chapter Summary: “Big White Goose: What Grudge, What Resentment”
Plot Points and Events
- Liu Zheng returns to the break room after visiting the Sewer to obtain information or materials, prompting Cow-Horse to mock him for “playing with shit.” Liu explains that he had the Sanitation Department’s Flymen do the work for him.
- To appease Cow-Horse, Liu brings Bad-Luck Coffee and desserts. He also gives Weaver Lady drinks, sweets, Spirit Thread, and preserved Aberrant Insect flesh.
- Liu learns that Weaver Lady was once able to speak human language but lost that ability after being injured by the Human-Headed Spider. He comforts her and promises that the creature will never hurt her again.
- Liu asks Weaver Lady about Craft Weaver-Spider, whom Box Weaver-Spider wants him to retrieve. He confirms that Craft Weaver-Spider is Box Weaver-Spider’s older brother, that he eloped with a hermit crab and lives in the sea, and that he is unlikely to return willingly because of his exceptional status and weaving abilities.
- White-Feather Chicken refuses to help Liu further until he completes an earlier commission. Liu becomes frustrated because completing the commission requires traveling to the Hundred Thousand Mountains, making it difficult to meet the delivery deadline connected to the Everything Shop’s “Shuffled Dice.”
- Liu asks Cow-Horse about other lottery shops. Cow-Horse explains that Liu’s unusual origins and status limit where he can go within Metropolis. Cow-Horse knows Liu does not truly belong but refuses to investigate, believing City Hall can handle any legal or political issues.
- Liu contacts Big White Goose and uses exaggerated humility, gifts, and flattery to secure their help. He asks Big White Goose to perform makeup for two Painted-Skin Clan girls during their centennial celebration.
- Big White Goose agrees to help, provided the family visits the Restaurant and books at least a Planetary Level private room. In exchange, Big White Goose asks Liu to find a Black Swan and tell them that “Ottawa misses them terribly,” then send them to their death.
- Liu asks about the grudge. Big White Goose warns that, if Liu learns the truth, he must help kill the Black Swan. Liu promises to help as long as doing so does not violate his principles.
- Big White Goose reacts mysteriously and hangs up. Cow-Horse mocks Liu for invoking his “principles,” claiming that even speaking that way to Ottawa is dangerous.
- Big White Goose unexpectedly appears at the lounge in person. They explain that they came to reveal the reason for their hatred and produce a jeweled mirror, instructing Liu to look inside.
