Background
Shion is the hereditary shrine maiden of the Land of Demons and the daughter of Lady Miroku. Miroku sealed Shion’s dangerous innate power inside a transparent bell when Shion was a child because she could not control it safely. The bell also serves as a protective charm. 125 174
Her ability to foresee death made her feared as well as revered: her death prophecies had never been wrong. When she witnessed a vision of demonic birds burning the world and an Evil God destroying the Ninja World, an unknown blue-haired woman forcibly interrupted the vision, leaving Shion severely injured. 120
The prophecy caused widespread panic in the Land of Demons. Civilians blamed Shion for the predicted catastrophe, seized the Daimyo Mansion, and attempted to execute her in the belief that her death might save them. Shion initially accepted this possibility with fatalistic indifference until Taruho summoned Konoha for help and Masayo’s team evacuated her. 124
Flower Island incident
While under Konoha’s protection, Shion leveraged her knowledge of Flower Island’s location to secure Masayo as her personal protector and later moved into his home with her maid, Chiba Yuriko. 131 132
Shion guided Konoha and Kumogakure’s expedition through the Mist Triangle using shrine-maiden artifacts. On Flower Island, she secretly performed the Nether Spring Seal to contact Miroku through the boundary between the living world and the Pure Land. The ritual sealed Flower Island and its cultists into the Land of Yomi. 144 147
When Shion failed to find Miroku’s soul in the Pure Land, she concluded that her mother was still alive somewhere in the physical world. This discovery ended much of Shion’s despair and gave her a reason to reclaim her responsibilities. 147 155
Return to the Land of Demons
Shion returned to the Land of Demons rather than remain in Konoha. With Masayo’s support, Taruho, and the shrine guardians, she suppressed the rebellion, captured its leader, defeated the hired shinobi backing it, and restored peace. 155
She later trained to control the power contained by Miroku’s bell and took a more active role against Mōryō. She deliberately allowed Mōryō’s revival in order to investigate the Evil God, then helped destroy him by binding his soul for Masayo’s finishing technique. 174 175
Later conflicts
Miroku later contacted Shion through a chakra projection from an alternate world and entrusted her with a mission to reach the Dragon Vein beneath Rōran with Naruto and Sasuke. Shion immediately departed the Land of Demons with Taruho to help rescue her mother and the others trapped there. 193
By the conflict with Manjusaka and the Shantak Birds, Shion had surpassed Miroku in sealing arts and was regarded as one of the Ninja World’s strongest combatants. 271 297
After the war, the Land of Demons formally joined the unified Land of Night. Shion was pregnant with Masayo’s daughter, Zi Ling. 291
Appearance
Shion has pale golden hair and large violet eyes resembling Miroku’s. Her early appearance pairs a yellow outer robe with white inner garments, while her formal shrine-maiden attire includes purple robes and a crown. 124 155 193
- Wears a transparent bell at her collar or on her person as both seal and protective charm. 120 125
- Uses conical hats, ritual scrolls, white paper streamers, and shrine-maiden ceremonial clothing during spiritual rites. 146 147
- Her appearance becomes notably more mature after two years of training and leadership in the Land of Demons. 173
Personality
Shion initially presents herself as spoiled, sharp-tongued, and openly defiant. She regularly argues with Naruto, criticizes Sakura, and reacts badly to discomfort or being treated as fragile. 124 125
This hostility conceals deep grief, fear, and loneliness. News that Masayo had encountered Miroku’s chakra incarnation immediately breaks her detached façade, revealing how intensely she misses her mother. 125
After learning that Miroku may still be alive, Shion becomes brighter, more hopeful, and more willing to accept her role. She remains playful, demanding, and fond of provoking Masayo and Kurama Yakumo, but she develops into a decisive leader willing to fight for her country and the world. 147 155 173
Abilities & Skills
Death Prophecy
Shion can foresee deaths and catastrophic future events. Her death prophecies are considered unfailingly accurate. 120
- Foretold the demonic birds, the Evil God, and the destruction of the Ninja World. 120 130
- Perceived Flower Island’s current location through prophecy, though she could not identify where it had previously been. 131 137
- Her visions can be resisted or interrupted by overwhelmingly powerful beings; the blue-haired woman in her apocalyptic vision injured Shion by forcibly ending the prophecy. 120
Shrine-Maiden Sealing Arts
Shion inherits spiritual sealing techniques distinct from ordinary shinobi fūinjutsu. Her chakra is particularly effective against supernatural entities such as Mi and Mōryō. 138 175
- Spirit Transformation Shackles — Purple chakra chains that restrain targets, bind souls, and seal hostile chakra. Shion used them to capture Yomi’s four assassins and remove Mōryō-derived chakra from their bodies. 173
- Nether Spring Seal — A powerful ritual seal that opens the Land of Yomi, immobilizes nearby targets, and can confine them there. Shion used it to seal Flower Island and its cultists away. 147
- Advanced sealing technique — By the later war, Shion had created a technique based on the Nether Spring Seal that surpassed Miroku’s own sealing arts. 271
- Yin-Yang Dual Separation Technique — Shion knows of and offers to teach this sealing method, which requires yin, yang, and water attributes and may counter immortal or regenerative enemies. 138
Spiritual Rituals and Artifacts
Shion can perform formal shrine-maiden rituals to invoke spirits and interact with the boundary between worlds. 138 147
- Requires ritual preparation to use the Nether Spring Seal independently; earlier in her training, Masayo had to perform the accompanying spirit-invocation dance. 138
- Uses a parchment infused with generations of shrine-maidens’ chakra to guide a vessel toward a location she strongly desires. 144 145
- Her transparent bell can create a protective barrier strong enough to shield her, Naruto, and Sakura from a major attack. 128
Combat Training
Shion eventually trains her body and chakra control rather than relying only on inherited spiritual power. By the Mōryō crisis, she moves with the speed and confidence of a trained ninja and can independently defeat multiple empowered assassins. 173 174
Equipment
- Transparent bell — Miroku’s heirloom that seals Shion’s dangerous power and protects her from spiritual harm. 120 125
- Shrine-maiden parchment — Navigation artifact that guides its user through the Mist Triangle when infused with shrine-maiden chakra. 144 145
- Ritual scrolls and paper streamers — Used to perform the Nether Spring Seal and other shrine-maiden rites. 147
- Hourglass — Used to time the Nether Spring Seal ritual on Flower Island. 147
Relationships
- Lady Miroku — Mother and predecessor as shrine maiden. Shion’s longing for Miroku shapes much of her early despair, while the discovery that Miroku is alive gives her renewed purpose. 125 147 193
- Masayo — Protector, trusted partner, and later the father of her daughter. He helps Shion value her life, supports her return to leadership, and assists her spiritual training and missions. 125 155 291
- Taruho — Loyal guard and adviser. He refuses to abandon Shion during the rebellion, arranges Konoha’s intervention, and remains devoted to restoring the Land of Demons under her rule. 124 155
- Kurama Yakumo — Romantic rival for Masayo’s attention. Their first meeting becomes a hostile exchange of insults, though they later cooperate during major crises. 133 232
- Kaguya Ōtsutsuki — Another of Masayo’s partners and Shion’s rival. Their meeting begins with immediate jealousy and hostility, but they later work together against Manjusaka. 232 265
- Naruto Uzumaki — Initially clashes with Shion due to her hostility and fatalism, but later joins missions connected to Miroku and the Dragon Vein. 125 193
- Chiba Yuriko — Shion’s former maid. Yuriko later betrays her, joins the Evil God’s followers, and becomes obsessed with revenge against Shion. 132 137 263
