Hong Yi is measured, thoughtful, and morally flexible rather than dogmatic. When Elder Tu teaches the foxes to reject wine, lust, wealth, and anger, Hong Yi argues that these things are not inherently corrupting; their value depends on how they are used. He sees wine as necessary for rites, wealth as necessary for worldly action, and anger as a defense against oppression. 65

He remains cautious around Xiao Yan’s extravagant schemes, often worrying about the political consequences of his friend’s pranks and overwhelming displays of power. Even so, he trusts Xiao Yan in danger and readily accepts his guidance, resources, and techniques. 69 74 75

Hong Yi is humble despite his rapid progress. West Mountain Secluded Valley

Hong Yi participates in the fox clan’s philosophical discussions, defending a balanced view of worldly desires against overly rigid abstinence. He and Elder Tu repeatedly have to correct the foxes after Xiao Yan twists the discussion into an excuse for indulgence. 65

While Xiao Yan protects the valley from aristocratic hunters, Hong Yi acts as a voice of restraint. He worries that Xiao Yan’s use of possessed mastiffs and political slogans could create an uncontrollable disturbance. 67 69 When Xiao Yan decides to seal the valley by filling its canyon entrance, Hong Yi correctly recognizes that he would reject official influence or noble privilege in favor of a direct solution. 70

Southern Campaign and Zhao Feirong’s Ambush

Hong Yi goes south to suppress pirates and bandits, drawing the attention of the Great Luo Sect. Bai Ziyue helps him withstand some of the resulting pressure, prompting Xiao Yan to intervene. 73

Zhao Feirong ambushes Hong Yi’s group with an illusion, yellow-sand ghosts, and the Yin-Yang Peach Deity Sword. Hong Yi dispels the illusion and prepares a desperate counterattack, but Xiao Yan arrives, neutralizes both sides’ attacks, and kills Zhao Feirong. 74

Exposure of the Great Luo Sect

After Zhao Feirong’s death, Xiao Yan gives Hong Yi the useful knowledge extracted from her memories. Hong Yi reveals that the Great Luo Sect is implicated in abducting women, training slaves, and selling them to wealthy households and brothels. 75

Hong Yi accompanies Xiao Yan to White Cloud Manor and asks to witness his methods. After Xiao Yan destroys the manor, he gives Hong Yi resources for cultivation and for supporting his followers, then assigns Hong Yi to continue bandit suppression while he exterminates the sect’s strongholds. 75 76

Buddha Statue and Acupoint Inheritance

Hong Yi discovers a sixteen-foot golden Buddha statue in an underground chamber and summons Xiao Yan to examine it. Although Hong Yi gains only limited insight through soul projection, Xiao Yan extracts the hidden Aperture Chapter of the Now Tathagata Sutra and gives Hong Yi a duplicate. 79

During Xiao Yan’s later seclusion, Hong Yi traps Mother Wusheng with fire lotuses and acquires a fragment of the Futureless Sutra. He exchanges its knowledge and other scriptures with Xiao Yan, continuing their mutual cultivation partnership. 81
