City A.
June 3rd.
Afternoon.
The cicadas chirped deafeningly, and the weather was scorching. The blazing sun roasted the earth, turning the entire city of steel into a massive steamer. Sweating profusely within it, pedestrians were repeatedly rubbed against the asphalt—fried on one side, baked on the other—while gritting their teeth and struggling to make a living. The news was also reporting on the increasingly abnormal climate of recent years.
"...Our city has entered a high-temperature June at the very beginning of summer for the first time in decades. Experts predict that outdoor temperatures exceeding forty degrees Celsius will continue for several days. A reminder to everyone: under the blazing sun and sweltering heat, take precautions against overheating."
At the school gate, three security guards with a total of seven teeth sat side by side in the narrow strip of shade beneath the eaves. They tugged their loose collars as wide as possible while vigorously fanning themselves with worn palm-leaf fans.
"This weather is so hot it's practically unlivable."
"Tell me about it."
"Hey, did you hear? Someone jumped from Gemini Towers a few days ago."
The ghost story finally brought a trace of coolness to the summer day. A sinister gust of wind rose out of nowhere, carrying a boy's figure past the older men with a whoosh.
Before they could see what it was, their view was blocked by an obese man built like a small mountain. It was hard to say whether his face reflected his heart, but his overbearing attitude made it obvious that he had no manners. "Hey, old men, let me ask you something."
The security guards, whose armbands bore the word "Tigers," all frowned. They did not want to stoop to arguing with a young man, but neither did they feel like responding to him.
The fat man remained oblivious. He was still caught up in the excitement of having just transmigrated, convinced that the whole world was a book, everyone else was an NPC, and only he was the protagonist—the child of destiny, free to do whatever he pleased.
Now, he was making sure that the real child of destiny in this book would not get in his way.
"Have you seen Zhen Liu today? The student council vice president."
If the fat man had been asking about some ordinary student, the guards might not have known anything. But Zhen Liu from the student council was no ordinary person. He had excellent grades and outstanding looks, and because he worked part-time, he often helped the faculty office and ran errands between departments. The guards had a very favorable impression of him.
"Who are you? Why are you asking about a student at our school?"
"He has far better manners than you."
"Heh, that was him just now. You missed him."
That gust of wind had been Zhen Liu speeding away on his bicycle. Looking again, they could only see his white-clad back, his slim waist straight and upright as he pedaled farther and farther away on a shared bike. Tall and lean, cool and clean. Even in the hottest summer, sweat was rarely seen on him; all one could sense was a faint freshness, like a sea breeze.
The fat man's expression turned ugly. Sourly muttering, "He isn't even that good-looking," he quietly cursed, "Damn it," then panted as he rushed back to his car, hoping to catch up with Zhen Liu.
One of the guards watched him give chase and grew concerned. "Zhen Liu won't be in trouble, will he? We should tell the school."
"I'll call the faculty office right away."
Only the calmest guard shook his fan and said, "He won't catch him."
To save time, Zhen Liu always took shortcuts through the narrow streets and alleys of the old district, where four-wheeled vehicles could not enter. Besides, that man did not even know where Zhen Liu was going. How could he possibly catch him? They only needed to sit back and watch the joke unfold.
At first, the fat man really was stumped. He could only dejectedly pound the steering wheel to vent his frustration.
But soon, his not-so-bright little brain remembered something. Everything happening now was the beginning of the book's plot, and several key details all matched up.
He did not need to run blindly after Zhen Liu like some idiot. He knew Zhen Liu's destination—the Twilight Mystery Club, Store L049, at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Fourth Street.
Qian Xiaoqian, Zhen Liu's school friend, had an uncle who had only recently managed to obtain Twilight's "partner" status and opened this fairly standard holographic murder mystery venue.
Since it had only just opened, business was sparse and it had not yet built up enough returning customers, making it difficult to gather enough players for a game. Every session had a minimum player requirement, so Qian Xiaoqian was often dragged in to make up the numbers. But Qian Xiaoqian had something come up that day and could not make it, so she asked her friend Zhen Liu to fill in.
And Zhen Liu was the first male lead of "Osmond."
