Ke Hang attended university in B City with Xin Chun and became one of his very few close friends. Their former class was marked by rivalry and superficial social ties, so Ke Hang supports Xin Chun's decision to avoid the class reunion and warns him that Shao Kang's attendance could provoke unwanted attention. 7 8

While pursuing his doctorate, Ke Hang joins a university forest-specimen project in Jingu Town with his mentor and classmates. Xin Chun uses knowledge from his previous life to anticipate the visit, arranges transportation for the group, and serves as their local guide during the Oil-Paper Umbrella Festival. 10 11
