Background

William arrives in Hua Country unexpectedly with luggage and an Alaskan Malamute after running away from an arranged engagement. His family had also opposed his keeping a dog, leaving him to seek refuge with his cousin Owen. Though Owen insists he will eventually have to return home, he allows William to move in. 26

After discovering that Owen is seriously pursuing Xin Chun with marriage in mind, William reacts with disbelief and disapproval. He considers Xin Chun unworthy of Owen because of assumptions about Xin Chun’s background, nationality, language ability, and perceived lack of status. 26
