Background

Loki was born a Frost Giant but was raised as Odin’s adopted son in Asgard. He grew up viewing Frost Giants as barbaric enemies while watching Thor receive Mjolnir, military prestige, and Odin’s apparent preference; Loki instead developed his aptitude for magic and strategy. 48 51

Odin considered Thor suitable for military command but intended to test Loki for kingship, despite Loki’s Frost Giant origins. The prospect of being passed over—and later discovering his true heritage through the Casket of Ancient Winters—deepened Loki’s resentment, insecurity, and desire to prove himself worthy of the throne. 48 51

He is also adaptable and politically gifted. After becoming king, Loki proves more effective at administration, diplomacy, and trade than at direct warfare, helping restore Asgard’s influence without relying solely on conquest. 111 277

Despite his pride and habit of concealing vulnerability, Loki ultimately demonstrates genuine responsibility toward Asgard. During Surtur’s attack, he exposes the identity he had feared revealing and nearly exhausts himself saving Asgardian civilians. 351 352

Succession Crisis

Loki conspires with King Laufey during Odin’s sleep, intending to remove Thor, destroy Jotunheim, and become Asgard’s uncontested ruler. He kills Laufey himself, but Thor survives and disrupts the plan. 50 51

After learning that he is a Frost Giant, Loki’s resentment toward Odin and Thor becomes more volatile. Thanos’s Mind Stone covertly amplifies these emotions, turning Loki’s personal grievances into part of an attack on Asgard. 51 52

Thanos’s Earth Operation

Thanos coerces Loki into pursuing the Space Stone, equips him with a mechanical arm, and threatens to retain his original hand until he succeeds. 64

On Earth, Loki uses the Mind Scepter and illusions to seize resources and force civilians into a plaza where he attempts to proclaim himself king. Lu Qi exposes his real body, secures the hostages, and captures him. 65

Loki is held accountable for the destruction of a S.H.I.E.L.D. base, the deaths of more than three thousand agents and researchers, and the murder of eighty civilians. Thor tries to protect him, while Lu Qi insists that Loki must answer for his actions. 66

Restoration and Kingship

After his original hand is restored, Loki gradually re-enters Asgardian family life. His knowledge of Asgard’s systems and willingness to assist with defense repairs reveal a more responsible side. 85 93

Odin formally proclaims Loki his successor, praising him for killing Laufey and ending the long war with Jotunheim. Loki receives Gungnir and assumes responsibility for Asgard’s government. 104
