Background / History
Xiao Lingling came from the Yu King Manor. Her mother, a businesswoman, taught her to give aid when others were weakest and to repay help with everything she could offer. Before meeting Lin Xin, Lingling relied on her beauty, sociability, and perceptive abilities to obtain protection from stronger men, believing this was the safest way to advance and survive. She later admitted that this approach had been naïve. 47 78 87
She joined the Spirit Pearl Gang because her sensing ability was useful for missions. She openly attempted to recruit Lin Xin, acknowledging that she would receive a benefit for introducing him, but promised to repay him if he accepted. 48
Listening Sword Trial
Lingling accompanied Lin Xin into the Listening Sword Trial. Her sensory secret method let her detect dangers, track the presence of someone following them, and assist with route selection. 75 78
During the trial, she was repeatedly injured but continued traveling with Lin Xin. When the Red Chamber Demoness poisoned and incapacitated him, Lingling carried him for three days despite her own injuries, refused to abandon him, and used her own supplies to help suppress the poison. 86 87 89
After Lin Xin rescued her from Peng Yan and his wife, he recognized the sincerity of her concern and regretted having mistrusted her. 85
Relationship with Lin Xin
While resting in the trial cave, Lingling confessed her feelings to Lin Xin and gave him a red-and-gold lucky sachet sewn by her mother. Lin Xin initially remained suspicious because of rumors surrounding her past, though he gradually came to recognize her devotion. 80 81
Severe internal injuries later ended her prospects of further cultivation. She gave Lin Xin her remaining pills rather than keep them for herself and intended to return home alone, but Lin Xin took responsibility for her and brought her to the Lin Family. 93
Lin Xin publicly announced their engagement at a family banquet. They later lived at Spirit Heart Mountain Manor, a name formed from their names, where Lingling supported Lin Xin while pursuing music, embroidery, medicine, pharmacology, and Array Dao. 95 105 165
Illness and Death
Lingling became pregnant and gave birth to Lin Xin's son, Lin Zhen. Her health deteriorated sharply after childbirth; doctors concluded that her Innate Qi and blood foundation had been exhausted, leaving her with little remaining lifespan. 106 107
A reclusive oddball prolonged her life by linking it to a tree planted in the Mountain Manor courtyard. Her condition improved, but she could not leave the courtyard without immediately becoming seriously ill. Her later body was described as having been born from the tree. 107 147
Lingling eventually dissipated after performing a final dance with Lin Xin on a frozen lake. Her death became the emotional catalyst for Lin Xin's breakthrough into Sword Intent and the formation of his Mind's Eye Sword Dao. 167
Appearance
Xiao Lingling was a young woman with fair skin, black hair worn to her shoulders, and large, watery, slightly upturned eyes that gave her a fox-like appearance. She was often associated with white clothing and a white hair ribbon. 23
- Curvy build and comparatively short legs. 23
- Commonly wore white dresses; she wore a white coat for her final dance on the frozen lake. 23 167
- Her injuries during the Listening Sword Trial left a bloody cut on her cheek. 77
- She was later frequently seen with a brown guqin. 117
Personality
Lingling was highly sociable, observant, and adept at using charm to build connections. Her weak combat strength and repeated near-death experiences led her to seek the protection of stronger companions, giving her a reputation that caused Lin Xin to initially doubt her intentions. 47 76 80
Beneath this pragmatic exterior, she was emotionally vulnerable and deeply loyal. She confessed that she had wrongly believed she could safely manipulate others, then placed genuine trust in Lin Xin after he recognized her among an impostor and protected her in the trial cave. 78
Her devotion was proven through action: she carried the unconscious Lin Xin while seriously injured, used her supplies to treat him, and refused to leave him behind. 86 87 89
After losing the ability to advance in cultivation, Lingling adapted to a quieter life at Spirit Heart Mountain Manor. She found comfort in music, crafts, embroidery, medicine, and studying Array Dao. 105 127 165
