Background

Jiang Bai was raised largely by nannies and private tutors while his career-focused parents devoted themselves to work. Though exceptionally gifted and outwardly sensible, he was diagnosed with emotional deficiency disorder after his grandfather noticed his detachment when Jiang Bai was eight. His grandfather subsequently took him on nature and sketching trips in hopes that art and the outdoors would help him heal. 13

During a trip to Shancheng, Jiang Bai became lost in its maze-like alleys and was cornered by local thugs. He surrendered his phone but refused to give up a watch that his grandfather had given him for his fifteenth birthday. Lu Yao intervened, defeated the thugs, recovered Jiang Bai's phone, and led him out of the alley. Jiang Bai came to regard Lu Yao as a source of light in his previously colorless life. 13

At Huiying High School, Jiang Bai maintained first place in his grade throughout his first year. The school granted his wish to establish the Flowers and Plants Club, for which it provided a glass greenhouse. Although the club attracted many applicants, Jiang Bai rejected all of them until he admitted Lu Yao. 14 15

When Lu Yao transfers to Huiying, Jiang Bai unexpectedly defends him from Chu Jiaojiao’s public mockery by citing Shancheng’s coordinates and criticizing the class’s geographical ignorance. Jiang Bai is thrilled to see his Shancheng rescuer again, but is hurt when Lu Yao claims not to know him. 13

He admits Lu Yao into the Flowers and Plants Club, gives him Marguerites, dispels rumors about Lu Yao and Chu Jiaojiao, and repeatedly arranges opportunities to spend time with him. 15 17 19

Growing Attachment

Jiang Bai’s special treatment of Lu Yao becomes increasingly visible at school. He lends Lu Yao his personal headband, gives him a towel after swimming to block unwanted attention, cooks for him during an illness, and allows him into his private room despite never allowing visitors there. 23 32 33 43

His private paintings reveal that Lu Yao has become the central subject of his art. When a fake romantic social-media post makes Jiang Bai believe Lu Yao has a partner, he becomes intensely jealous before learning it was You Yu’s prank. 24

Kidnapping and Escape

Jiang Bai and Lu Yao are abducted while buying fertilizer for Lu Yao’s Marguerite plant. Drugged and held for ransom in a warehouse, they realize their kidnappers likely intend to kill them after receiving payment. 51 52

Jiang Bai assists Lu Yao’s escape plan, deliberately draws Pockmarked Face’s attention, and endures a vicious attack on his ankle rather than expose Lu Yao’s attempt to cut their bindings. After Lu Yao frees them, the pair deceive their captors with a false trail and flee, with Lu Yao carrying Jiang Bai. 53

Following their rescue, Jiang Bai sketches the kidnappers for police and suffers a fractured ankle requiring a cast. His cooperation and resilience lead Lu Yao to reject the idea that he alone saved Jiang Bai. 54

Confession and Separation

Lu Yao discovers Jiang Bai’s hidden room filled with paintings of him and realizes that the Marguerites were an indirect confession. Overwhelmed, Lu Yao leaves without responding, while Jiang Bai interprets the retreat as rejection. 60

Jiang Bai later confesses directly that he likes Lu Yao and wants to be with him. Lu Yao asks for time so he can speak to his family, but ultimately sends Jiang Bai an apologetic message after Father Lu’s health deteriorates from the family conflict. Though emotionally distant during the River City filming, Jiang Bai continues caring for Lu Yao in small ways, such as leaving a hair dryer and handwritten note beside his bed. 71 72

When Jiang Bai is gravely injured after following Lu Yao into the forest, Lu Yao finally admits the depth of his feelings. Lu Yao promises to be with him if Jiang Bai survives, then later openly calls him “my boyfriend.” Their relationship is tacitly accepted by Grandpa Jiang and Father Lu. 77 78

Lu Yao’s Accident

After Lu Yao is critically injured saving a child from a truck, Jiang Bai remains at his hospital bedside, covered in Lu Yao’s blood and refusing to leave. He places the matching ring on Lu Yao’s finger while Lu Yao remains unconscious. 83
