Ch. 1Bounty Hunter
Plot points and events
- In Rum Town’s underground tavern, pirate captain “Bloodhand” Galt boasts about taking protection money from a town, then burning its people alive despite promising to spare them. His crew celebrates the massacre.
- Rain, a quiet young man in a black coat, ignores the pirates and studies bounty posters. Galt’s poster offers 15 million Beli.
- A drunken pirate insults Rain and attacks him with a scimitar. Rain’s neck and shoulder turn to stone, stopping the blade; he kills the attacker with a crushing blow.
- Galt orders his crew to shoot Rain. Bullets damage his stone body but do not stop him, and the wounds quickly repair. Rain retaliates by firing dense stone pellets, killing or wounding most of the gunmen.
- Galt charges with a double-bladed axe, but Rain’s body breaks apart into stone fragments and reforms behind him, revealing a Logia-like ability. Rain kills Galt with a compressed obsidian blade and takes his head as proof of the bounty.
- Rain leaves the terrified survivors behind and walks out into the storm.
Character developments
- Rain is introduced as controlled, self-assured, and merciless toward those who threaten him. His stone-manipulating Devil Fruit lets him harden, reshape, launch, and reconstruct his body.
- Galt is exposed as cruel and hypocritical: he calls piracy “freedom” while taking money under false promises and murdering civilians. His confidence collapses when he realizes Rain’s power.
- Galt’s surviving crew shift rapidly from swaggering celebration to helpless terror.
Significant themes
- Cruelty and justice: Galt’s brutality contrasts with Rain’s decisive punishment, though Rain’s own violence is equally lethal.
- Power and fear: The pirates’ belief that strength gives them license to abuse others is overturned when they encounter someone stronger.
- The cost of piracy: The chapter foregrounds the suffering inflicted on ordinary people, then shows the criminal world’s violence turning back on its perpetrators.
Character interactions
- Galt boasts to his crew, who encourage his cruelty.
- A lackey provokes Rain and attacks him, prompting Rain’s first display of power.
- Galt and his men attempt to overwhelm Rain with bullets and brute force, but Rain defeats them with his Devil Fruit abilities.
- Rain ultimately ignores the surviving pirates and leaves with Galt’s head to claim the bounty.
