The Marines were essentially just a sharp blade in the hands of the World Government. As long as you were strong enough and still willing to kill for them, they would turn a blind eye to whoever you liked, who you slept with, and what kind of shady business you conducted behind closed doors.
What was more, ever since meeting Lucas, Gion's growth rate in strength had been nothing short of terrifying.
In a mere three years, she had skyrocketed from a newly graduated rookie all the way to the rank of rear admiral.
In terms of actual combat power, she had already surpassed the vast majority of vice admirals at Marine Headquarters who were just coasting along.
Whether it was her teacher Zephyr or Vice Admiral Tsuru, who treated her like a younger sister, both were happy to see this happen.
However, where there were happy people, there were bound to be miserable ones.
Jion was the one fretting so much his hair was nearly turning white.
As Gion's classmate, he had fallen in love at first sight with the aloof and proud young woman from the very first day they entered the Elite Training Camp.
Over the past few years, he had poured his heart out, waited on her hand and foot, and tried every possible method to pursue her, yet he had never even held her hand.
In the end, the goddess he had pined for and chased after for so many years had actually been snatched away by some gangster who popped out of who-knows-where.
How could he possibly swallow this grievance?
He had never met Lucas, but from the female marines who always returned from missions with Gion, he had long since carved that man's characteristics into his mind—long silver hair and azure-blue eyes.
Therefore, starting half a year ago, whenever it was his turn to be on duty at Red Port, he would deliberately go out of his way to find trouble with any man who had silver hair.
Even though he knew nine times out of ten that he was mistaking the person, he never tired of it.
This was probably the only way he could vent the resentment in his heart.
Lucas turned around and looked at the marine officer in front of him, who had a mess of messy hair and a face that screamed "I'm in a very bad mood," wearing a quirky expression.
He really hadn't expected that he would meet this love rival of his in such a manner.
He had to admit, this brother looked a bit too "weathered"—he was obviously only in his early twenties, yet he looked like an uncle in his late thirties.
"According to the World Government Passenger Management Regulations, I don't seem to have any obligation to explain these things to you, do I?"
Lucas calmly asked in return.
Jion's expression sank instantly.
He knew he was being unreasonable. In the past, when he made things difficult for others, he would at most stare at the person for a few minutes, and the other party would naturally leave out of guilt.
For some reason, however, the calm gaze of the silver-haired youth in front of him made him inexplicably furious.
The words were already out, and since he was riding a tiger and difficult to get off, he could only bite the bullet and say:
"The rules are dead, but people are alive. I now suspect you of carrying contraband, and I suspect you are a spy for the pirates. Speak, what exactly are you doing at Red Port?"
"I'm going to Paradise to see a doctor."
Lucas very cooperatively told the truth,
"My body has some issues, and if I don't get it cured, I might die."
Jion was stunned for a moment.
He looked Lucas up and down. Although the youth in front of him had a somewhat pale complexion, his figure was upright, and no matter how he looked at it, he didn't resemble someone on the verge of death.
However... he then thought about how that bastard who stole Gion was rumored to have physical fitness like a monster, capable of fighting Gion for several days and Yoru.
The person in front of him was definitely not him.
It seemed he had messed up again.
An inexplicable wave of guilt welled up in his heart. Jion awkwardly scratched his head and impatiently waved his hand:
"Fine, fine, go on, go on. Don't let it delay your medical treatment."
Lucas nodded slightly, turned around, and melted into the bustling crowd.
Jion looked at his retreating back, frowned, and muttered to himself:
"Strange, why do I always feel like something's not right..."
After Yoru fell, Lucas walked out of an unassuming little inn.
Black mist surged from within his body, wrapping around his entire form. This was one of the basic abilities of the Vampire-Vampire Fruit, allowing him to perfectly blend into the darkness during Yoru without strong light.
Of course, this ability wasn't omnipotent either.
Once electricity became widespread in the future and every street and alley was hung with electric lights, this little trick would become useless.
A pair of huge black bat wings unfolded from his back. With a gentle flap of the wings, his body lifted off the ground as if it were weightless.
He was like a true shadow, flying toward the summit of the Red Line.
He could certainly have taken the Bubble Tram like ordinary people since he didn't have a bounty on his head, but he didn't want to do that.
As everyone knew, the Celestial Dragons were pains in the ass with unpredictable thought processes; even if there was just a one-in-a-million chance of running into one, he didn't want to gamble.
Better to avoid extra trouble than to invite it.
Lucas reined in his thoughts, flew across the Red Line, and with a flap of the bat wings on his back, landed on the soil of Red Port on the side of Paradise.
