Background

Lucas was originally a twenty-first-century office worker who died in a car accident and reincarnated as an abandoned infant in the Kingdom of Ye. A nun named Sister Eos took him into an orphanage and gave him his name, providing the only peaceful period of his childhood. 2

At age ten, Lucas watched the Grey Wolf Gang massacre the orphanage and kill Eos. His grief awakened Conqueror’s Haki, but the gang captured him rather than killing him. He spent five years pretending to be brainwashed while learning everything that could make him stronger, then slaughtered all three hundred-plus Grey Wolf members on his fifteenth birthday. 2 6

That same year, Lucas began fighting the Marine trainee Gion. She initially overwhelmed him with Rokushiki and Haki, but their repeated battles allowed him to copy and master her techniques. Their rivalry became a long-running romantic relationship despite his rejection of Marine authority. 2

By 1520, Lucas had become an unaffiliated force feared by every gang in Ye. He defeated Roberts, the official responsible for the orphanage massacre, then exterminated the Flying Group to prevent retaliation. Roberts’s dying call brought Golden Lion Shiki’s attention down on Lucas, forcing him to flee when Shiki dropped an island onto the sea. 1 5 6

Lucas drifted to Toransu Town, where Adoya rescued him. There he obtained the Batto Batto no Mi, Model: Vampire from an ancient temple and discovered that its Life Energy absorption was uniquely compatible with his body. 7 8

After absorbing Airey’s electrical Lineage Factor, Lucas sought Dr. Kureha’s help to learn whether his body could survive additional abilities. Kureha trained him in Lineage Factor identification, separation, and Zoan transformation-wavelength modification. 11 16

In the West Blue, Lucas recruited or allied himself with Baccarat, Nico Robin, Lafitte, and Daz Bonez while dismantling criminal families and Du Feld-linked forces. He renamed a captured submarine Eos in honor of Sister Eos and later used the defeated West Blue families’ assets to establish the Eternal Financial Group. 18 28 31 35 37

Lucas expanded the Eternal Financial Group by absorbing the God of Fortune Financial Group. Although founded partly to secure stable funding for his ambitions, the organization reformed or eliminated criminal businesses, rejected slavery and narcotics, and implemented unusually humane labor conditions. 37 62 64

As the group’s power grew, Lucas recruited Issho as its head of security and began attracting sustained attention from Cipher Pol and the World Government. He discovered and secretly recompiled the Lineage Factor of Cipher Pol infiltrator Stussy, making her one of his closest agents while preserving her independent will. 63 65 68

Lucas spent two years deliberately avoiding public attention while consolidating his underground territory and traveling with the Kuja Pirates. During this period, he expanded his family and organization, arranged training or protection for several younger companions, and continued pursuing scientific, martial, and commercial development. 120 159

His conflict with Shiki resumed when the resurrected Flying Pirates attacked the Yulo Peninsula from the sky. Lucas defended the Eternal Financial Group’s territory directly, engaging Shiki with his Hybrid Form, Dracule, blood techniques, and electromagnetic attacks. 96

Lucas subsequently moved the Yulo Peninsula from the West Blue to the New World. Issho lowered the relocated peninsula into waters near Aplunan Island, after which Lucas began planning further recruitment and exploration in the North Blue. 102

His protection of Reiju and Sanji brought him into conflict with CP0 during an attack on Germa. He intervened against commander Avignon and later refused to kill Judge because Judge was Reiju’s father, instead proposing that a clone be used to fake his death. 115 120

After forcing Marco and Jozu to retreat, Lucas confronted Whitebeard directly. Whitebeard’s superior Haki defeated his blood-control attempts, dispersed his strongest combined attacks, and inflicted injuries that temporarily impeded his regeneration. Lucas then sought greater pressure through a ten-day all-out duel with Issho, during which he first demonstrated Conqueror’s Haki Infusion. 135 147 148 150 153

Lucas later held a worldwide swordsmanship tournament to publicly establish himself as the world’s greatest swordsman. His overwhelming victories over numerous challengers demonstrated the scale of his flying slashes and further intensified World Government fears regarding his strength. 189 193 194

During the tournament, Lucas fought Shanks, countered his Observation Killing through Life Energy sensing, and copied Divine Departure after witnessing it. He subsequently overwhelmed Mihawk’s gigantic flying slash, but Ochoku ambushed him with a teleporting, Haki-coated short sword that pierced his heart. 197 198 200

While critically wounded aboard the Eos, Lucas battled the Vampire Fruit’s will in Consciousness Space. Remembering the women he loved, he destroyed that will and regained consciousness, completing the breakthrough that led to his awakened Zoan form. 202 204

Lucas later captured Vegapunk during his confrontation with Borsalino at Punk Hazard. His subsequent battle with Kaido demonstrated his Supreme Armament Haki and further growth, and Kaido eventually permitted Yamato to leave Onigashima with him. 209 215 217

By the time the Gorosei reported him to Imu, Lucas had mastered Conqueror’s Haki Infusion and become powerful enough to threaten the Holy Land. Imu consequently ordered his elimination, while Lucas continued pursuing the strength needed to live freely beyond the World Government’s control. 189 236

The World Government issued the Federation’s first official bounties, placing an “ONLY DEAD” bounty of 1,860,900,000 Beli on Lucas. Studying the other posters, he inferred that Cipher Pol probably had no agents inside the Federation and that Kuzan might have withheld Robin’s true identity, since she remained listed as Talia. 240

While the Yulo Peninsula underwent reconstruction, Lucas and his family temporarily stayed in Dressrosa’s royal palace. He planned to use technology to turn the peninsula into a floating island for greater security, and Vegapunk completed the spatial stabilizer he had requested. 242

Lucas used the Time Spirit Room to accelerate his companions’ training. Hancock spent three years inside over three days outside before undergoing repeated Lineage Factor Optimization, while Lucas brought Ulti, Lami, Baby 5, Reiju, and Koala back from Amazon Lily to Punk Hazard so they could also benefit from accelerated training. He later accompanied the expedition to Hachinosu, where his strengthened companions pursued Ochoku. 244 247

To prevent the Flying Pirates from attacking the Federation’s islands, Lucas sought intelligence through Hawkins’s divination and Shyarly’s predictions. He persuaded Arlong to bring Shyarly by offering the Fish-Man Tribe an opportunity to compete for the title of strongest race. Lucas preferred attacking Shiki’s base to risking Amazon Lily and Punk Hazard in a defensive battle. 263

Lucas confronted Shiki directly and countered his falling-island tactic by closing the distance, making Shiki risk crushing himself alongside his opponent. Their conflict culminated in Shiki’s death; Lucas’s Extreme Mastery: Asura Blood Light Slash tore through the enormous earth-and-stone attack and golden slashes directed at him. After the islands were dismantled, Lucas restored the lifespan Kalifa and Issho had expended and treated Issho’s eyes with blood essence. 270 272 276

By Chapter 290, Lucas’s bounty had risen to 25,930,000,000 Beli. He suspected that the World Government wanted to provoke a clash between him, Kaido, and Charlotte Linlin by keeping his bounty below theirs. Having been unilaterally branded a pirate, he adopted the practice of displaying his family’s wanted posters prominently in his home. 290

Lucas is a silver-haired, blue-eyed young man with a lean but explosively muscular build. His intense Life Energy caused dramatic physical growth, leaving his base body roughly three meters tall by his voyage with Baccarat. 1 20

Personality

Lucas is relentlessly disciplined. His daily training once included ten thousand sword swings, swimming through freezing seas, and using Geppo against Ye’s violent weather. He views strength as the foundation of survival because his childhood taught him that weakness invites exploitation. 1 2

He is pragmatic and exceptionally cautious in battle, using Haki even when his regeneration could let him endure an attack. He avoids needlessly provoking overwhelming enemies, as shown when he escaped Shiki rather than attempting an unwinnable fight. 5 6

Lucas is ruthless toward traffickers, gangsters, and enemies who threaten his companions, often killing them for both security and profit. However, he refuses to bully ordinary civilians and chose to purchase a ship rather than seize it by force. 6 9 11

Though initially driven by revenge and freedom, Lucas later recognizes that he wants strength to protect his chosen family and the dreams they hold. 41

He distinguishes justice from institutional obedience. In Lucas’s view, justice means a peaceful society where people can live safely, eat adequately, and remain free from murder, kidnapping, and slavery. 46

Lucas is an effective but highly personal leader. He rewards competence and loyalty, delegates administration to trusted subordinates, and recognizes when his rapidly expanding organization requires expertise beyond his own. 37 51 62

His compassion is frequently entangled with calculation. He heals, shelters, and supports vulnerable people, yet may deliberately exploit their dependence or emotional weaknesses to bind them to his side. 3 103 159

He does not regard himself as universally compassionate and finds it difficult to empathize with unknown strangers. Nevertheless, he does not prevent his companions from helping others and is willing to resolve trouble arising from their generosity. Lucas values retaining his humanity despite his vampiric abilities. Although blood and Life Energy can sustain him, he continues eating three meals a day because he does not want to become increasingly like a monster. 20

He originally chose the sword because it was common in the Kingdom of Ye and told Mihawk that he had never considered himself a swordsman. During his duel with Issho, he compensated for weaker Armament Haki by expending several times as much Haki, leaving him mentally exhausted despite retaining substantial physical stamina. His Mythical Zoan endurance does not provide limitless Haki. 153

Batto Batto no Mi, Model: Vampire

Lucas deliberately sought the Mythical Zoan Vampire Fruit because its powers complement his abnormal physique. Its Life Energy absorption repairs injuries and can strengthen his body. 8
