Background

Lucas was originally a twenty-first-century office worker who died in a car accident and reincarnated as an abandoned infant in the Kingdom of Ye. A nun named Sister Eos took him into an orphanage and gave him his name, providing the only peaceful period of his childhood. 2

At age ten, Lucas watched the Grey Wolf Gang massacre the orphanage and kill Eos. His grief awakened Conqueror’s Haki, but the gang captured him rather than killing him. He spent five years pretending to be brainwashed while learning everything that could make him stronger, then slaughtered all three hundred-plus Grey Wolf members on his fifteenth birthday. 2 6

That same year, Lucas began fighting the Marine trainee Gion. She initially overwhelmed him with Rokushiki and Haki, but their repeated battles allowed him to copy and master her techniques. Their rivalry became a long-running romantic relationship despite his rejection of Marine authority. 2

By 1520, Lucas had become an unaffiliated force feared by every gang in Ye. He defeated Roberts, the official responsible for the orphanage massacre, then exterminated the Flying Group to prevent retaliation. Roberts’s dying call brought Golden Lion Shiki’s attention down on Lucas, forcing him to flee when Shiki dropped an island onto the sea. 1 5 6

Lucas drifted to Toransu Town, where Adoya rescued him. There he obtained the Batto Batto no Mi, Model: Vampire from an ancient temple and discovered that its Life Energy absorption was uniquely compatible with his body. 7 8

After absorbing Airey’s electrical Lineage Factor, Lucas sought Dr. Kureha’s help to learn whether his body could survive additional abilities. Kureha trained him in Lineage Factor identification, separation, and Zoan transformation-wavelength modification. 11 16

In the West Blue, Lucas recruited or allied himself with Baccarat, Nico Robin, Lafitte, and Daz Bonez while dismantling criminal families and Du Feld-linked forces. He is pragmatic and exceptionally cautious in battle, using Haki even when his regeneration could let him endure an attack. He avoids needlessly provoking overwhelming enemies, as shown when he escaped Shiki rather than attempting an unwinnable fight. 5 6
