Warm golden sunlight streamed through the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows, falling across the solid wood table and making the wineglasses atop it gleam with scattered light.
Dawn reclined against the leather sofa at the head of the table, his fingertips lightly tapping the tabletop in a steady patter. A casual smile rested on his face.
On the sofa beside him, Monet lowered her eyes as her slender fingers methodically sorted through a thick stack of documents. Her long hair draped over her shoulders. On the other side, Stussy lounged against the armrest, a slim ladies' cigarette between her fingers. Her red lips curved faintly as she exhaled a thin ring of smoke, her gaze fixed on the tightly shut wooden door with lazy amusement in her eyes.
Knock, knock—
A knock suddenly sounded. It was soft and exceptionally cautious, utterly lacking the arrogance and presence expected of Underworld emperors. Instead, it was as though they feared disturbing those inside, even deliberately softening their breathing.
After receiving permission, the door slowly opened, and four figures filed inside, every step unusually restrained.
At the front was the broad-built Shipping King Umit. This man controlled the deep-sea shipping routes, and even Marine Headquarters usually gave him some measure of respect. Yet now, none of his usual pride or confidence remained. Lingering unease hid in his eyes, his hands hung properly at his sides, and he did not dare raise his head too high.
Close behind him came Loan Shark King Du Feld. This man was accustomed to driving people to ruin with compound interest and had countless blood debts on his hands. Now, his fat body was slightly hunched as his hands continuously rubbed together. An almost fawning smile covered his face, and his tiny eyes were full of ingratiating intent.
