Background

Dawn was originally an office worker from Blue Star who died in a traffic accident and was reborn as an infant in another world. His birth name is Davy D. Dawn, though he publicly used Herman Dawn, the surname attached to his parents’ aliases. 2

His parents belonged to the secretive David Clan. Seven years before Dawn left Carnival City, a masked Longarm Tribe attacker—suspected to be a CP0 agent—fatally wounded them. Before dying, they warned Dawn never to reveal his true name or approach people dressed like their killer. 2

Dawn survived alone in Carnival City’s industrial slums through traps, ruthless combat, and the growth ability later examined by Dr. Kureha. He systematically eliminated the local gangs, culminating in the destruction of the One-Eyed Gang and the death of its leader Victor. 1 2

After leaving Carnival City for Drum Island, Dawn learned that his body’s enormous appetite was the cost of converting food into life energy. Kureha’s diagnosis also gave him reason to believe that he could safely wield two Devil Fruits. 6
