Background / History

Xie Xiuji was originally the chief disciple of True Person Liuyi at the Heavenly Feather Sect. At age twenty, he transferred to the Sword Sect and became the personal disciple of Red Cloud Peak’s Immortal Venerable Yinglian. After Yinglian ascended, Xie inherited Red Cloud Peak and became Sword Venerable Mingxiao. 6

Five hundred years before the Flowing Feather Sect incident, Xie and his fellow Heavenly Feather Sect disciple Qin Buwen discovered the evil sword Devour Heaven in the cave dwelling of a fallen Mahayana demonic cultivator. Xie recognized that its Sword Spirit could corrupt its wielder and argued for its destruction; Qin instead succumbed to its temptation, wounded fellow disciples, and defected. Xie was subsequently ostracized by the Heavenly Feather Sect before joining the Sword Sect. 131

After killing an escaped Mahayana tiger demon, Xie suffered grave injuries and lost his memories. Once his memories returned, he experienced a prophetic dream depicting a possible future in which cultivators stripped away his spiritual root and immortal bones, harvested his heart blood, and cast him into the Demon Realm. He understood Song Zhizhi’s intervention as having saved him from that fate, and chose to uphold the marriage promise he made while amnesiac. 6
