Background / History

Shen Gangfu was originally an ordinary inner disciple of the Eight Forms Sect. After five years without receiving sect resources, he left the sect and went to Blackwater City, where he joined the Liansheng Escort Agency. He later became one of Heji’s renowned Thirteen Guardians, gaining the respect of fellow escorts and Blackwater City residents. 4 33 46

While working as an escort, Shen suffered serious hidden injuries to his shoulders, back, and meridians. The injuries eventually halted his progress and caused him to regress from the Three Gates to the Two Gates over ten years. 61

Around ten years before the Martial Examination, Shen became Golden Gate Martial Academy’s resident master and moved the academy to the Outer City so impoverished youths could have an opportunity to study martial arts. The academy remained notably separate from gang influence despite its connection to the Heji escort firm. 4 38

Shen accepted Lu Li as a student after recognizing the boy’s endurance, composure, and unusual understanding of martial principles despite his extremely poor Root Bone. He personally taught Lu Li foundational stance work, Bagua combat methods, and the realities of lethal combat. 4 5 6 7

After Lu Li’s rapid progress and victory over Lei Zhengming, Shen formally accepted him as a personal disciple and bestowed the lineage name Hua Yuan. He later became Lu Li’s adoptive father in all but name, while continuing to be recognized as Lu Li’s true master even after the Eight Forms Sect arranged a higher public affiliation for him. 16 61

Appearance

Shen Gangfu is a sturdy, solidly built martial artist whose bearing remains imposing even when he is not displaying force. He commonly dresses plainly, though he wears formal brocade robes when meeting old escort comrades. 4 7 32 33

  • Solid arm and strong physique. 4
  • Usually wears gray or black training robes. 7 20 33
  • Has graying temples and black hair, sometimes worn loose over his shoulders. 16 20
  • Often stands or walks with his hands clasped behind his back. 20 27 33
  • Maintains a naturally authoritative, unhurried presence. 4 33

Personality

Shen is stern, practical, and direct. He rejects flashy performance martial arts in favor of techniques that preserve one’s life and end a fight decisively. To him, martial arts are killing arts first and foremost; survival matters more than pride or appearances. 4 7 17

Despite his severity, Shen teaches according to each disciple’s ability. He honestly tells Lu Li that his Root Bone is exceptionally poor, adjusts his training to build Lu Li’s weak body safely, provides nourishing food and medicinal support, and insists that recovery is as important as exertion. 4 5

Shen is deeply protective of those under his care. He publicly disclosed Lu Li’s poor aptitude to convince Ironwood Hall that Lu Li could not have killed Baldy Jiao, refused Zhao Shuiliu’s demand to surrender his disciple, and sought external help when he believed Lu Li’s Gate-Breaking had damaged his foundation. 13 14 26 27

His concern for Lu Li grows into paternal affection. Shen takes pride in Lu Li’s achievements, is moved to tears by his completed Eight Trigrams Moving Stake, and accepts Lu Li’s recognition of him as an adoptive father. 32 61

Abilities & Skills

Martial Cultivation

Shen was formerly a Three-Gates martial artist, but longstanding escort-work injuries caused his cultivation to decline to the Two Gates. His damaged meridians cause recurring pain, particularly in damp and cold weather. 61

  • Possesses enough authority and martial presence to confront Ironwood Hall Master Zhao Shuiliu directly. 13 14
  • Retains the experience and technical knowledge of a veteran escort and senior martial instructor. 4 17
  • Understands the progression from qi and blood through Internal Force and the four major gates: Skin Tempering, Flesh Refining, Tendon Alteration, and Bone Forging. 5 16

Bagua Fist

Shen is an accomplished Bagua practitioner who teaches both its stance arts and lethal applications. His instruction stresses circular movement for positioning and direct attacks for killing. 6 7

  • Demonstrated the Bagua Towering Hand Throat Lock, trapping the throat and waist to eliminate escape routes. 7
  • Demonstrated the Bagua Crushing Fist, an Inch Force strike intended to damage internal organs without obvious external wounds. 7
  • Teaches that Bagua footwork must remain mobile, using turning and circling to create direct killing opportunities. 6 7
  • Corrects disciples’ posture and movement down to minute details. 5 6

Form-Intent Blade Secret Art

Shen possesses and passes down a copied Form-Intent Blade Secret Art, which contains a Fundamental Skin-Tempering Method. He entrusts it to Lu Li only after formally accepting him as a personal disciple. 17

  • Explains that Secret Arts can penetrate the skin membranes of martial artists below six Skin Temperings. 17
  • Instructs that blade combat changes a fighter’s balance, footwork, center of gravity, and commitment to attack. 17
  • Emphasizes that a missed blade attack can be fatal, unlike an unarmed exchange. 17

Rest-Step Hidden Blade

Shen teaches Lu Li the Rest-Step Hidden Blade secret art before the Martial Examination. Its core principles are stillness, concealed killing intent, and the sudden release of force through Divine Intent. 38 39

  • Its defensive and offensive value lies in concealing breath, intent, and openings. 39
  • Shen considers the cultivation of Divine Intent difficult even for Flesh Refining martial artists. 39
  • Its secret technique, Void Silence Returning Wind, is later used by Lu Li to defeat Captain Zhang. 42

Escort Survival Methods

Shen teaches practical methods intended to keep a martial artist alive outside formal duels. 17

  • Chili-lime powder — used to blind or disrupt an opponent. 17
  • Coin darts — concealed projectiles intended for vital points. 17
  • Advocates deception, concealed weapons, and escape when necessary rather than treating open combat as the only honorable option. 17

Equipment / Items

  • Copied Form-Intent Blade Secret Art manual. 17
  • Chili-lime powder pouches. 17
  • Thirteen concealed coin darts. 17
  • Training sabers and academy weapons. 17

Relationships

  • Lu Li / Lu Hua Yuan — Personal disciple and later adoptive son. Shen recognizes Lu Li’s potential despite his poor Root Bone, personally instructs and protects him, and remains his true master even after Lu Li gains an official Eight Forms Sect affiliation. 4 16 61
  • Zhao Kuo — Fourth Senior Brother and disciple. Zhao assists Shen in training and protecting Lu Li, while Shen trusts him to handle academy matters. 4 7 13 46
  • Lin Lanyi — Young mistress of the Liansheng Escort Agency. Shen has a familiar relationship with her and asks her for a method to improve Lu Li’s Root Bone. 16 27
  • Yu Canglang — Shen’s former master in the Eight Forms Sect. Their relationship is strained by Shen’s earlier lack of recognition, though Yu eventually praises Shen for accepting Lu Li. 46 47 49
  • The Thirteen Guardians — Shen’s former escort comrades in Heji. They address him with titles including “Chief,” “Boss Shen,” and “Old Escort Chief.” 33
  • Zhao Shuiliu — Ironwood Hall Master and adversary. Shen refuses to surrender Lu Li despite Zhao’s accusations and threats against the academy. 13 14
