History
Ancient predecessor
The Primordial Era Northbank Defense Line consisted of Level-4 City Walls. Chen Fan studies its defeat through information preserved in a Jade Slip and concludes that stronger construction could have changed the outcome 131 170.
The ancient line later emerges from beneath the modern defenses as a 170-kilometer apparition replaying its final battle. Its commander, Old Ye, explains that he sacrificed himself to seal the line and preserve its supplies. Once the formation confirms that Jiangbei is not in enemy hands, it releases eerie stones, treasures, and blueprints for future generations. Chen Fan responds by resolving to keep Jiangbei from falling again 190.
Construction of the modern line
Jiangbei’s shattered Sea-Calming Node leaves the region vulnerable to an Undersea Strange Tide. The lingering aura of the departed figure known as “That One” temporarily suppresses the threat, giving Chen Fan time to construct a replacement defense 158 176 177.
Funded by New Continent mining, Chen Fan moves and extends the Mortal Domain’s Rainy Season Defense Line along the coast. The completed framework joins a towering mountain at its end. He also builds a separate, fixed 14.8-kilometer ring wall called the Last Line of Defense around the domain’s original territory 170.
The coastal wall remains an empty shell until Chen Fan installs its weapons and logistical structures. By July, Year 380, it is fully equipped with Godslayer Cannons, Anti-Aircraft Cannons, Soul-Devouring Sculptures, and an Eerie Fire–Copper Pipe support network. Its reported total cost is 800 million eerie stones 172 175 176.
Elder Seven initially questions the cannon arrangement and apparent lack of weapons against greater wraiths. After learning about the Godslayer Cannons’ damage-carryover effect, he concludes that the line surpasses Defense Line Seven in every respect except wall level—and may be overbuilt for its expected opposition 178.
Abilities & Defensive Effects
Great Wall
- Allows connected City Walls to move freely within the camp’s range 170.
- Enables the line to shift between coastal defense and an enclosure around Nameless Mountain, the Harbor, Sunset City, Mortal City, and Northbank City 176.
- Initially depends on exposed Eerie Fires mounted on the wall. Destroying one can interrupt camp coverage and immobilize part of the line 170.
- Does not extend to the separate Last Line of Defense, which is unconnected and fixed in place 170.
Lights of Ten Thousand Homes
- Gives the wall itself Eerie Fire coverage, determined by the highest-level Eerie Fire installed on it 190.
- Extends across connected City Walls 190.
- Combines with Great Wall to enable the entire defense line’s long-distance deployment southward 198.
Wraith Blood Patterns
- Absorb wraith blood and strengthen the wall over time 190.
- Receive further enhancement from the Level-8 upgrade path and Majestic and Magnificent blessing 191.
- Make the mature line substantially stronger than an ordinary Level-10 defense line 198.
Damage Mitigation and Reflection
- Thorn Counterarmor reflects a portion of both melee and ranged damage 146.
- The Level-6 upgrade reduces damage inflicted by enemies attacking from a distance 182.
- Majestic and Magnificent, applied through a Heavenly Dao Stone, enhances upgrade effects, including wall patterns, Thorn Counterarmor, and Great Wall 191.
Repair and Supply Network
- Copper Pipes connect the wall to repair altars; during the Black Tortoise frontline battle, small corrosion gaps are restored almost immediately 198.
- Eerie Fires behind the wall are linked by Copper Pipes and kept ready for activation 175.
- The wall’s surface can serve as a Gondola track, allowing rapid travel along its length 170.
Voice Like a Grand Vow
- The Level-10 effect allows sounds made atop the wall to resound throughout Heaven and Earth 190.
- Chen Fan uses it to announce the Mortal Domain’s advance while the line moves through Yellow Springs Mouth 198.
Armament & Support Structures
Initial Completed Loadout
| Structure | Quantity / Placement | Function | Reported Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max-level Godslayer Cannons | 8,500; one every 20 meters | Main bombardment system. Damage carryover allows them to engage both large targets and swarms 175 178. | 320 million eerie stones 175 |
| Max-level Anti-Aircraft Cannons | 1,700; one every 100 meters | Prevent flying wraiths from crossing the wall 175 183. | 64 million eerie stones 175 |
| Max-level Soul-Devouring Sculptures | 1,700; one every 100 meters | Reduce nearby cannon towers’ ammunition consumption by 40% 173 175. | 4.4 million eerie stones 175 |
| Eerie Fires and Copper Pipes | Support network behind the wall | Provide connected infrastructure, with reserve fires ready to activate 175. | Not separately stated |
| Repair altars | Readied before the Undersea Strange Tide | Restore damaged wall sections through Copper Pipe connections 182 198. | Not separately stated |
Later Additions and Safeguards
- Five Black Tortoise Cannons — added to strengthen the Northbank Defense Line 192.
- Exhausted Ammunition — a Heavenly Dao blessing on Soul-Devouring Sculptures lets nearby defenses continue firing for three hours after their eerie-stone supply fails. The sculptures and affected defenses then shatter 182.
- Holy Water and armored defenders — handle creatures that survive the bombardment and reach the battlements 183.
- Clearwind Formation — slightly increases defenders’ movement speed and disperses some battlefield stench 183.
Major Deployments
Rainy Season Enclosure
During ordinary rainy seasons, the line moves inland to surround the Mortal Domain and Northbank City. The fully equipped defenses withstand seasonal Strange Entities without damage sufficient to trigger the repair altar. Northbank City’s residents prepare their own defenses, then discover that no attack reaches them 176 182.
Undersea Strange Tide
In October, Year 382, the line meets the Undersea Strange Tide with a nearly simultaneous volley from all 8,500 Godslayer Cannons. Anti-Aircraft Cannons intercept airborne attackers, while defenders clear the few creatures reaching the battlements 182 183.
Jiangbei survives the first night without serious losses, and the line holds every attack over the following fifteen days. Its success brings Tianyi of the Eternal Night Hall to investigate and opens negotiations over food and transport support for the wider war 183.
Reinforcement of Black Tortoise Frontline One
During the continent-wide assault, a separate 170-kilometer Level-5 temporary line replaces the Northbank Defense Line on Jiangbei’s coast. The Level-10 Northbank line travels south to reinforce the 108-kilometer Black Tortoise Frontline One 198.
The mobile line passes through Yellow Springs Mouth, locks into place against the coastal mountain range, and withstands blood-corrosion attacks that devastated the original frontline. Its cannons hold the tide while Chen Fan destroys the hidden enemy directing it, securing the immediate battlefield for evacuation under the Spark Plan 198.
Boundary Battlefield Departure
On May 1, the Mortal Domain’s leaders and allies gather at the Northbank Defense Line before Eternal Night Continent departs for the Boundary Battlefield. They take a group photograph, which Chen Fan requests as an engraving for his study 394.
Associated People & Factions
- Chen Fan — builder and principal upgrader; personally constructs the line and directs its major deployments 170 190 198.
- Wang Kui — receives sector-condition reports and consolidates them for Chen Fan 186.
- Elder Seven — experienced frontline commander invited to inspect the defenses; revises his initial criticism after learning their capabilities 178.
- Old Ye — commander of the ancient predecessor; preserves its resources through his final sacrifice 190.
- Slaying Immortal Holy Land — answers the emergency call with 729 disciples, supplies, and five million eerie stones before the Undersea Strange Tide 182.
- Eternal Night Hall — recognizes the line’s protection of civilians and cooperates with the Mortal Domain during the wider evacuation 183 198.
Organization
- The line is divided into East and West halves, each containing numbered sections for locating positions, assigning personnel, and replenishing ammunition and supplies 190.
- West Section 1 directly adjoins the western mountain range 190.
- Sector personnel report the wall’s condition after overnight battles, with reports ultimately reaching Wang Kui 186.
- Battlefield crews recover eerie stones, exotic treasures, and usable Strange Entity materials outside the wall 183 186.
