Power Progression

The documented progression below belongs to Tiamut, the Celestial incubated within Blue Star, rather than to the order as a whole.

Background and Organization

Celestials place embryos inside planets and supply them with energy. Blue Star’s embryo received an unusually large infusion; energy leaking from it helped its ancient inhabitants develop extraordinary powers. The Celestials later intervened when conflict among those inhabitants and visiting alien factions threatened the planet. They stationed Gamil there and barred access to its core with a Magic Barrier that opened for periodic energy infusions 133.

Their experiments and agents have also shaped Blue Star’s peoples. The Titans were modified and assigned to protect developing planetary seeds before rebelling. The Celestials later created mutants to protect Blue Star, then replaced them with the Eternals 95 213.

The order’s stated duty is to preserve cosmic balance and allow universes to develop. Its members address threats ranging from destructive beings to weapons and outbreaks capable of ending a universe. In one Multiverse, thousands of Celestials answer to a five-member council whose offices include Exitar, Recorder, Judgment, Judge, and Maintainer; the holders of those offices can change 257.

The Dark Celestials share an origin with the balance-preserving order but pursue destruction instead. They invoke the authority of the “First God” and fight the other Celestials 169 221 263.

Appearance

Celestials vary greatly in size and form, and may appear through avatars rather than their True Bodies.

• A Celestial confronting Dormammu has metallic-looking skin, six red eyes, four arms, and a body over 100,000 kilometers tall 73.
• Tiamut appears golden, with three pairs of glowing yellow eyes and a feminine form 138.
• Exitar stands roughly 200,000 kilometers tall and has a broad, rugged build 239.
• Three hostile Celestials appear as black, mechanical figures with eight glowing red eyes 221.

Abilities and Duties

Cosmic Intervention

• Celestials can channel immense energy through avatars or True Bodies. Celestial avatars intervening on ancient Blue Star killed many powerful combatants and sealed others away 133.
• Exitar’s assigned duty is to erase planets deemed unfit so their universes can develop normally 239 257.
• They can establish barriers and seals: Blue Star’s core was protected by a Magic Barrier, while Celestials later sealed Cosmic Locusts within the Solar System 133 279.

Celestial Reproduction

• Embryos develop inside planets and receive energy from established Celestials. An embryo’s quality and absorbed energy affect the newborn’s strength 133.
• Tiamut says a developing Celestial must absorb enough souls to control its body. She proposes delaying her birth until she can emerge into space without destroying Blue Star 141.
• Tiamut describes a possible path beyond birth: merging with alternate selves to reach Multiversal Level, then with a universal law to reach Omniversal Level 139.

Major Events

• Blue Star and Tiamut: Thanos’s absorption of the Aether awakens Tiamut. She later assures Wanda and Hulk that she will not destroy Blue Star, and eventually emerges from it 138 188 286.
• The One Below All crisis: Gamil reports that Celestials attempting to reseal a fragment of the One Below All were overwhelmed. After the fragment is sealed, Kelan arrives with more than a hundred black Celestials and attacks the exhausted survivors 218 232.
• Fire Phoenix conflict: Exitar rallies Celestials to defend their Multiverse. An ambush by opposing Celestials breaks their containment of Fire Phoenix; Exitar suffers a fatal Soul Core injury 259 262 263.
• Cosmic Locust outbreak: Celestials initially hesitate to report the infestation or risk their True Bodies. When the locusts breach their seal and infect Celestials, more arrive to contain them while limiting damage to Blue Star 265 266 279.
• Dark Celestial purge: After Thanos kills the Dark Celestial Tarim, other Dark Celestials blame the Multiverse’s native powers and vote to slaughter them 301.
