Power Progression

Background / History

The Black Order serves as both Thanos's elite command group and the name used for his bioengineered military legion. Its ordinary warriors are produced in incubators rather than born naturally; they are designed for strength, fearlessness, and unquestioning obedience, but possess little intelligence 2. Chips placed the warriors under Deep Blue's control during the Milky Way expedition 10. Later, Thanos recognized that this engineered loyalty did not necessarily amount to faith: ordinary Black Order members could not receive his Divine Grace despite their willingness to obey him even unto death 121. Their control was not flawless indefinitely; some biochemical soldiers suffered mental breakdowns and turned on one another, a problem that became less frequent after human operators took over their control 314.

The five principal generals are Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Cull Obsidian, and Supergiant. They enable Thanos to continue expanding his empire while he cultivates and personally directs major campaigns 9. Corvus was Thanos's first subordinate and became the group's leader; he consolidated that position through his relationship with Proxima Midnight 27.

Thanos first used the Black Order against Captain Marvel near Ice Crystal Planet, ordering them to test and weaken her before he fought personally. Their forces failed to stop her destruction of ten assault ships, prompting Thanos to condemn the generals as too weak and order further training 2 3.

Before invading the Milky Way, Thanos placed the empire under a Level One war mobilization. Once his ten-thousand-ship fleet crossed the wormhole, each general received command of 1,500 warships, while Thanos retained more than 2,500 under his direct control 9 10.

During the war with Asgard, the Black Order conducted reconnaissance, breached fleet formations, exterminated resistance, and encircled more than a million Asgardian warriors. Although individually weaker than ordinary Asgardian soldiers, their numbers, warships, and coordinated deployment secured the battlefield 13 19 27. Their decision not to activate a spatial blockade allowed Thor and Sif to escape, for which Thanos harshly reprimanded them 26 28.

After the Asgard campaign, the Black Order continued leading Thanos's expansion. Four months later, it reported the conquest of 104 inhabited planets, with resistance movements suppressed through extermination and population relocation 50. Over the following three years, the legion conquered more than a thousand further inhabited worlds 51. Thanos continued to rely on its loyalty while reserving important administrative decisions for himself 51.

Corvus's death at the hands of the Dwarves, followed by his survival through the Death Glaive, convinced Thanos that the generals' Planetary Level strength was insufficient to govern his expanding territory. He ordered all five into training until they reached Sub-Celestial Father Level 62. After their breakthrough, he sent them ahead in the expedition to Blue Star to help assess its defenders 67 68. During a later conflict with the Alliance of Gods, Hercules defeated the Black Order alongside Hela, Laufey, and Ancient One; Corvus again sacrificed himself to protect Proxima 112.

As Thanos became a Dimension Lord, he assigned the Black Order and other subordinates to find and invade universes through Quantum Tunnels. He offered them half of their conquests, giving Corvus and Proxima an opportunity to acquire resources of their own 234. Their campaigns included invasions of Universes X001 and X259 and, later, the Journey to the West World 240 244 261 357. Thanos subsequently directed his forces to spare species that surrendered, partly to avoid attracting Celestial attention 240.

• Stand over two meters tall, with six limbs, jet-black skin, sharp fangs, and ferocious faces 2 12.
• Are engineered for space warfare and can fly and charge through vacuum without additional equipment 19.

Bioengineered Physiology

Black Order warriors are purpose-built combat organisms rather than natural lifeforms.

• Possess immense physical strength; Proxima Midnight states that destroying a spaceship with one hand would not be difficult for a Black Order member 1.
• Can operate and fight in open space without conventional flight equipment 19.
• Charge at speeds exceeding 150 kilometers per hour during planetary assaults 12.
• Lack fear of death and are designed not to betray Thanos 2.
• Limitation: Their low intelligence and inferior individual strength leave them vulnerable against stronger races and high-level superhuman opponents 2 19.
• Limitation: Engineered obedience does not make ordinary warriors devout followers eligible for Divine Grace, and prolonged artificial control has caused some soldiers to suffer mental breakdowns 121 314.

Mass Space-Warfare Deployment

The legion is structured for overwhelming numbers and combined-arms operations.

• Six hundred small motherships carry more than 3,000 warriors each.
• One hundred and fifty medium motherships carry more than 10,000 warriors each.
• Fifty large motherships carry more than 30,000 warriors each 19.
• Operate alongside assault ships, interstellar beasts, fighters, spatial bombs, and cosmic mines 18 19.
• The five generals may vote on battlefield decisions when Thanos is absent; this authority was used during the Asgard campaign 26.
• Exploit their ability to survive in vacuum against natural fighters. In Universe X001, small groups broke opponents' protective armor formations and left them to suffocate, while more than a million warriors sustained the attack through attrition 240.
• Can sustain invasions on a far greater scale than in the first Asgardian war: the Universe X259 campaign involved over a million spaceships and hundreds of millions of God Warriors 261. During the Journey to the West invasion, Elysium's factories produced nearly ten thousand Bio-Warriors per second 357.
• Limitation: Numbers alone do not guarantee victory. Dark Dimension creatures using dark energy routed ordinary Bio-Warriors despite being outnumbered, and an invading fleet initially drove the Black Order back on Eden before tens of billions of reinforcements arrived 242 408.

Psychic and Tactical Support

The generals supplement the legion's brute-force warfare with reconnaissance, mental powers, and strategic command.

• Supergiant identifies evidence from mined asteroids and specializes in mental control, telepathy, psychic transmission, and memory theft 10.
• Ebony Maw discovers inhabited worlds, uses terrain manipulation against resistance, and coordinates resource extraction after conquest 10 13.
• Corvus Glaive directs surveys, fleet movements, and encirclement plans 10 32.
• Corvus and Proxima established a Quantum Tunnel on Mars, sent scouts into an unfamiliar universe, and expanded the reconnaissance once its coordinates were confirmed 234.
• During the renewed assault on Universe X001, the commanders kept their ships at range and under fire rather than accept close combat with Blue Star's remaining defenders 244.

Relationships

• Thanos — Creator, ruler, and commander. The Black Order swears absolute loyalty and treats him with near-religious reverence after witnessing his power against Odin 9 26 28. He relies on their obedience but limits their authority over major decisions; later, he offers them a share of inter-universal conquests 51 234.
• Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight — Lovers; Corvus formed the relationship partly to secure leadership, while Proxima accepted to protect her position as the weakest general 7 27. Corvus has risked and sacrificed himself to save her 112.
• Hela and Laufey — Newly recruited allies operating alongside Thanos's forces. Neither accepts Corvus's authority, causing him to fear for his position within the Black Order 44. They later join the Order in campaigns across other universes 261 357.
• Nebula — Commands Black Order troops during the operation on Aihe Star, leading more than a thousand soldiers to surround Star-Lord 46.
• Ronan the Accuser — Previously defeated the five generals alone a century earlier; later becomes Thanos's temporary ally in the search for the Power Stone 45.
• Wanda and Quicksilver — Command or operate alongside Black Order forces in inter-universal campaigns. Wanda sends warriors ahead through her Darkhold portal as scouts and later leads them in the Journey to the West World 199 261 367.
• Gamora and Nebula — Later use the Order's obedient Bio-Warriors when undisciplined human subordinates repeatedly disrupt their assaults 359.
• Alternate-universe Thanos and Sain — A Black Order serving another Thanos appears during the Kro Star and Titan succession events. Ebony Maw initially conspires with Sain against Quicksilver, but he and the other generals refuse to support Sain once they learn of his concealed agreement with the Kurus Empire 272 278 284.
