The Black Order serves as both Thanos's elite command group and the name used for his bioengineered military legion. Its ordinary warriors are produced in incubators rather than born naturally; they are designed for strength, fearlessness, and unquestioning obedience, but possess little intelligence 2.

The five principal generals are Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, Cull Obsidian, and Supergiant. They enable Thanos to continue expanding his empire while he cultivates and personally directs major campaigns 9. Corvus was Thanos's first subordinate and became the group's leader; he consolidated that position through his relationship with Proxima Midnight 27.

Thanos first used the Black Order against Captain Marvel near Ice Crystal Planet, ordering them to test and weaken her before he fought personally. Their forces failed to stop her destruction of ten assault ships, prompting Thanos to condemn the generals as too weak and order further training 2 3.
