Carl awakened the Eight Gates, gained favorability, and proved his strength during the Royal Capital selection, earning places in both the Blue Rose Knights and the Black Bulls. At the Black Bulls base, his connection with Vanessa awakened unstable threads, while Noelle struggled with her magic and left the squad hall in tears.

• Carl gained the Eight Gates and favorability systems after Charlotte examined his false Four-leaf Grimoire, then caught her when her curse overwhelmed her magic as Yuno awakened his own Four-leaf Grimoire.
• Carl traveled with Yuno and Asta toward the Royal Capital, defeated Revchi after he stole Yuno’s Magic Stone, and returned to Hage Village with them.
• Carl caught Sister Lily when she fell from the church roof, donated coins for the church, and gained her favorability while Asta protested their growing closeness.
• Carl won a drinking contest against Yami, obtained a Magic Stone, unlocked Morning Peacock, and used his magic to suppress Charlotte’s curse before opening the Gate of Healing.
• Carl outpaced the other candidates in the selection trials, defeated Sol Marron’s attack, and withstood Yami’s Dark Cloaked Iai Slash using the Eight Gates and Morning Peacock.
• Carl chose both the Black Bulls and the Blue Rose Knights, and his stitched squad cloaks mysteriously fused as Vanessa’s red threads restored the missing half of her cloak.
• At the Black Bulls base, Carl’s bond with Vanessa caused their matching kitten marks to appear and her uncontrolled threads to quiet around him, while Noelle mistook their tangled clothes for indecent behavior.
• Vanessa calmed her threads after they linked her thoughts and feelings with Carl, Noelle’s Water Cannon veered into Magna, and Yami invited the squad to test Carl as Noelle practiced her inaccurate water spells outside.

Carl led Noelle and Vanessa through the Ice-Fire Land, where they awakened new magic and helped purify the Elf Remnant Souls. After gaining the Ice and Fire Song Armguard and becoming captain of a Black Bulls team, Carl entered the dungeon ruins, where the group became separated and Carl found Mimosa trapped in a poisonous cage.

• Carl rescued Noelle from her runaway water magic, and Yami welcomed her into the Black Bulls before assigning her and Vanessa to train under Carl at the Ice-Fire Lake.
• Carl learned that the lake might hold Elf Remnant Souls, accepted leadership of the team, and later cooked a feast that earned the squad’s approval and awakened Gluttony Magic.
• Noelle and Vanessa endured the lake’s dangerous ice-and-fire domain until Noelle awakened Sea Dragon’s Cradle and Vanessa awakened Fate Creation Magic—Same-Frequency Resonance.
• The Ice-Fire Elves attacked the group and tested Carl, who endured their power and convinced Argo and Kesia that humans could protect one another.
• Argo and Kesia lifted their curse, merged into the Ice and Fire Song Armguard, and sent their magic to Charlotte before Carl returned with the others.
• Yami named Carl captain again and sent her team to investigate the Elf-connected dungeon ruins, where Finral’s teleportation separated Vanessa from the others.
• Carl found Noelle and Finral caught in a diamond-ore trap, freed them, and then located Mimosa imprisoned among poisonous crystal pillars.
• Carl assured Mimosa he could protect her from the poison mist, crushed several pillars, and drew an even greater cloud of mist toward himself.
