Background / History

Klein accidentally draws Audrey Hall, Alger Wilson, and Aster into the space above the Gray Fog after touching their Crimson Stars. Though initially startled and considering sending them back, he improvises a composed, inscrutable persona, transforms the space into a hall with a bronze table, and accepts “The Fool” as his title. 3

The first gathering develops into the Tarot Club. Klein serves as a witness for transactions, accepts the proposal for regular meetings, and establishes the weekly schedule: every Monday at three o’clock, with members required to remain alone. Sustaining the gathering leaves him spiritually exhausted enough to collapse into deep sleep afterward. 5

Outside the Gray Fog, Klein joins the Nighthawks and the Divination Club. Aster’s ominous warning about Klein’s unusual fate leaves him alarmed that his death, transmigration, or connection to the Antigonus Family Notebook may have been discovered. 9 11

Klein’s investigations and his association with Aster repeatedly draw him into the consequences of the Antigonus Notebook, Old Neil’s corruption, Lanevus’s scheme, and the seemingly arranged coincidences surrounding Tingen. He gradually determines that the coincidences are supernatural in nature, though their architect remains unknown at the time. 30 43 46

During the disaster surrounding Sealed Artifact 1-27, Klein is killed in an attack connected to Ince Zangwill’s manipulation. He is mourned and buried by his family and former comrades, but his corpse later becomes active and Klein ultimately resurrects from his grave. 69 70 71

After returning, Klein refuses to reveal himself to his family because he believes doing so would endanger them. He joins Rachel in pursuing Ince, leaves Tingen, and establishes himself in Backlund under the false identity Sherlock Moriarty, intending to work as a private detective. 72 76

He prefers evidence over blind trust. Even when Aster provides useful intelligence, Klein verifies requests through pendulum and dream divination, limits what he reveals in conversation, and remains alert to the possibility that Aster is manipulating him. 22 24 40

Despite his suspicion, Klein is compassionate toward those under his care. Old Neil’s corruption and arrest affect him deeply, and he continues seeking ways to understand the danger surrounding Neil, Lanevus, and Tingen rather than dismissing them as someone else’s problem. 10 24

Klein is protective of his family and accepts personal isolation to keep them safe. Following his resurrection, he refuses to return openly to Benson and Melissa despite longing to see them, judging that his continued presence would expose them to supernatural danger. 72

Formation of the Tarot Club

Klein’s accidental summoning of three strangers becomes the origin of the Tarot Club. By embracing the Fool persona, he creates a neutral gathering where members exchange formulas, materials, intelligence, and favors while concealing their real identities. 3 5 10

As the club develops, Klein uses Roselle’s Diary exchanges to gather historical and mystical knowledge. He eventually discovers that Aster Crowley’s real-world identities overlap with the Tarot Club member Lovers, becoming the first member whose identity he conclusively uncovers. 39 52 54

Investigation of Old Neil and Lanevus

Information supplied by Aster causes Klein to suspect that Old Neil has been influenced by the Hidden Sage. Though Klein cannot prevent Neil’s eventual loss of control, he concludes that Aster’s intervention may have stopped Neil from completing a far more dangerous resurrection ritual. 10 24

Klein also links Aster’s pursuit of Lanevus to Gracis’s disastrous investment opportunity. His divination confirms the danger, and he later learns that Aster killed Lanevus after disrupting the scheme in Tingen. 21 40

Silver-Eye Incident

While confronting the abnormal behavior of Sealed Artifact 2-049, Klein’s eyes temporarily turn silver—the same color as Melvin’s. Purification and Daly’s examination reveal no detectable contamination, leaving the phenomenon unresolved. 34 36 41

Azik later demonstrates that his own Silver Eyes can distinguish a Beyonder’s rank, giving Klein further reason to suspect that the silver-eye phenomenon has an unknown mystical significance. 58

Coincidence Investigation

After Azik warns that Klein’s fate appears discordant, Klein and Aster compare the suspicious coincidences surrounding them. Klein permits Aster to Spirit Channel him for the image of a house with a red chimney, then agrees to divide Tingen into search areas for further investigation. 43 46

The investigation ultimately leads Klein to recognize that Ince Zangwill and Sealed Artifact 0-08 are responsible for the chain of manipulated events around Tingen. Ince’s orchestration of the 1-27 disaster directly causes Klein’s death and becomes the central motive behind Klein’s pursuit of revenge after his resurrection. 69 70 72

Death and Resurrection

Klein is killed amid the disaster surrounding Sealed Artifact 1-27, following the death of Kenley and the crippling of the Tingen Nighthawks. His funeral is attended by Melissa, Dunn, Daly, Frye, and Leonard, all of whom believe he is dead. 69

His buried corpse becomes active before Klein resurrects and escapes from his grave. Rachel meets him upon his return, helps him understand the aftermath, and joins him in directing their shared hostility toward Ince Zangwill. 70 71 72

Backlund and the Sherlock Moriarty Identity

Unable to return safely to his former life, Klein travels to Backlund with Rachel and adopts the identity of Sherlock Moriarty. He becomes a private detective to earn money, investigate supernatural incidents, and prepare for the dangers he expects to unfold in the city. 76

As Sherlock, Klein relies on Rachel’s shelter and resources while accumulating debt for the Sequence 6 cane-sword she provides. His work brings him into contact with local Beyonder gatherings, the Intis Embassy, and the investigation surrounding Ian Wright and Detective Zreal. 72 76 89 91

Intis Embassy Assassination Attempts

Klein is ambushed in Rachel’s former residence by Meursault, an executioner of the Zimang Party. Despite being injured and outmatched in close combat, he kills Meursault by drawing Against the Light from his cane and activating Dawn Storm. 100

Divination identifies the Intis Embassy as the force behind the attack, targeting Klein because of his connection to Ian Wright. With official reporting too dangerous, Klein seeks help from Rachel and Azik before arranging hidden protection through Maric. 101 111

A later visitor impersonates Ian in an attempt to assassinate Klein. Klein exposes the disguise through the impostor’s use of the wrong name and summons his bodyguard, but an unknown black liquid interrupts the struggle and renders him unconscious. 112
