Because of his intervention in the Backlund Great Smog Incident, the number of people who died outright would certainly be far lower than in the original story... But the number who later died indirectly from illness and disease would not be much different.
That was because those deaths were not caused by a Beyonder Ability. They stemmed from Backlund's long-standing problems: smog laden with pathogens and particulates that would have seriously harmed people anyway!
The "Demoness" had merely sped up the process.
The workers and the poor had lived in that smog for years, suffering its effects all the while. Once they fell ill, they would struggle to survive without prompt treatment...
But the reality was that they could not afford a doctor... And the churches' aid was a drop in the bucket.
Abner understood that the harm caused by the Great Smog was almost historically inevitable. Without the "Demoness" to accelerate it, the deaths would simply have been spread over a longer period instead of being concentrated now...
