The essence of prophecy was peering into the River of Fate. Although the "fate" it revealed encompassed past, present, and future, Abner's current prophetic ability, which relied on the Pure White Eye, could reveal only one of those.
Unless he specified otherwise, the Pure White Eye defaulted to "future fate."
So when he had just tried to divine "Mr. Sarr's location," what he had really wanted to know was where Mr. Sarr would appear in the future.
But the prophecy failed... There are roughly two possibilities:
First, the prophecy involves something of such high standing or level that it exceeds the limits of this trial version of my prophetic ability. In that case, failure is only natural.
Second, Mr. Sarr may no longer have a future. He's either dead now or will die soon...
Judging by my previous attempts, it would take at least an Angel to interfere with this trial version of prophecy. Otherwise, a lack of information would, at most, make the revelation less clear and definite.
Does Mr. Sarr's case involve an Angel? That seems unlikely...
By comparison, it's more likely that he's already dead or about to die.
Thoughts racing, Abner hesitated briefly before making another prophecy:
"Where is the Beyonder Characteristic left behind by Mr. Sarr?"
If he could divine that, it would mean Mr. Sarr really was dead... Abner sincerely hoped this prophecy would fail too.
But things did not go as he wished. A revelation soon surfaced in his mind:
"Tosk."
Tosk? I remember that's a port city on the border between Intis and Loen... I'll have to pass through it on my way to Trier. Mr. Sarr's characteristic will end up there in the future... Is this where their fates intersect?
*But Tosk is about the size of Tingen. It must have
