Ever since Steam and Machinery became symbols of the era, more and more cafés had lowered their standards and turned into something resembling cheap restaurants, providing busy laborers with tea, coffee, bread, toast, and dishes such as lamb stewed with tender peas. As a result, respectable gentlemen and ladies no longer went to cafés to discuss matters or treated such behavior as a symbol of status. Instead, all kinds of clubs began appearing to replace the cafés' original social function.
But Abner and Xio did not care about status. Besides, they had originally met in a café, and discussing matters in a similar environment still gave them an inexplicable sense of "atmosphere" and ritual.
What was more, the café where Abner had arranged to meet Xio was of decent quality, with an elegant and quiet environment.
