Ch. 1121Abner's Theory
Chapter Summary: “Abner’s Speculation”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Abner quickly regains consciousness after fainting, though he remains mentally foggy because the Eye of Wisdoms has temporarily “gone on strike.” Xio carries him to bed and notices his unusually blank, uncharacteristic expression.
- Once recovered, Abner learns that Xio had been tracking Shermane and briefly fought the Demoness Trissy. Their objectives happened to align, allowing them to cooperate temporarily.
- Xio asks why Abner suddenly fainted. He gives a technically truthful but incomplete explanation, saying he had helped “The World” and the Hanged Man and was merely tired. She recognizes that he is withholding important information but chooses not to press him.
- Xio gives Abner a potion made from Mummy Powder, teasing him about allegedly spending the day with a visiting woman. The potion was sent by Darkwill, who has returned to Backlund. Abner destroys it to prove his “innocence,” and he and Xio exchange their usual teasing banter.
- After Fors returns, Xio and Abner stop arguing and prepare to have dinner together.
- Alone, Abner analyzes the murals he saw on the primitive island. He concludes that the Unknown originated as an aspect or emotion of the Oldest One and possesses immense symbolism but lacks the characteristics and Sefirah needed to become a complete Great Old One.
- He theorizes that the Unknown repeatedly cast versions of “him” into reality so they would gather Beyonder characteristics, Uniquenesses, and possibly Sefirot, which would eventually return to the Unknown after death and complete it.
- Abner further reasons that the God of Luck altered this process through God’s Casket, turning later incarnations into Soul Stones whose characteristics did not return to the Unknown. The Calamity Seal was an exception because, after reaching Sequence 1, it entered the Land of Unknown—but was prevented from merging with the Unknown by the illusory sun created by the White Angel.
- He suspects Sequence 1 is the Unknown’s true assimilation threshold, while Sequence 3 merely draws its attention. He also wonders whether the God of Knowledge has restricted him through the Eye of Wisdoms.
- Lilith privately concludes that Adam allowed Abner to see the murals as compensation for manipulating him during his life as the Mechanical Emperor. Adam may be helping Abner learn crucial information while the Unknown’s vigilance remains weak.
- The chapter ends by shifting to Klein, who attends Senator Macht’s ball with Sharron and Ludwell. He notices surgeon Aaron Ceres and his pregnant wife and approaches them, evidently struck by the significance of their pregnancy.
Character Developments
- Abner: Recovers from his overload and moves from casual conversation into serious investigation. His deductions reveal a growing understanding of the Unknown’s origins, motives, and assimilation rules. He also becomes increasingly suspicious of the Eye of Wisdoms, the God of Knowledge, Adam, and the forces influencing his repeated incarnations.
- Xio: Demonstrates her physical strength, professional competence, and familiarity with Abner’s personality. She recognizes when he is hiding information but respects his boundaries. Her playful teasing reinforces their close friendship.
- Adam: Though absent, he is revealed to have potentially aided Abner by arranging the murals as a form of compensation and indirect guidance.
- Lilith: Acts as an analytical observer, interpreting Adam’s motives and assessing Abner’s current advantages and dangers.
- Klein: Appears in a social setting with Sharron and becomes immediately interested upon seeing Aaron’s pregnant wife, suggesting that the pregnancy may have major personal or supernatural significance.
Significant Themes
- Knowledge and its dangers: Abner’s pursuit of truth risks mental overload and attracts the attention of powerful entities.
- Manipulation and compensation: Adam’s apparent assistance may be both an act of goodwill and repayment for earlier manipulation.
- Identity and repeated existence: The chapter explores the meaning of Abner’s multiple incarnations and how each version may be part of a larger plan by the Unknown.
- Assimilation and incomplete divinity: The Unknown possesses vast symbolism but lacks the substance required for true Great Old One status, making Abner’s characteristics and experiences central to its potential completion.
- Trust and concealment: Abner hides information from Xio, while Xio understands but does not challenge him. This reflects the balance between friendship, secrecy, and personal danger.
- Humor amid cosmic horror: Abner and Xio’s teasing—including the Mummy Powder joke—provides a light contrast to the chapter’s increasingly disturbing revelations.
Character Interactions
- Abner and Xio: Their relationship combines trust, affectionate mockery, and mutual awareness of each other’s secrets. Xio cares for Abner physically after his collapse, questions his condition, and jokes about his supposed romantic activities.
- Abner and Darkwill: Although Darkwill does not appear directly, his prank involving the Mummy Powder allows him to tease Abner from a distance.
- Abner and Adam: Their interaction is indirect: Adam leaves the murals, while Abner interprets them as a carefully arranged message and possible compensation.
- Lilith and Abner: Lilith observes and evaluates Abner’s situation, judging that he is currently well-positioned to resist the Unknown and advance beyond its restrictions.
- Klein and Aaron Ceres: Their meeting at the ball begins a new thread, with Klein’s attention immediately drawn to Aaron’s pregnant wife.
