Ch. 1Orre
Chapter Summary: “Orre”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Sixteen-year-old Baimu finishes training and reflects on his life in Pyrite Town, Orre—a harsh, industrial settlement surrounded by desert and controlled by powerful factions.
- As an orphaned, undocumented transmigrator with little money, education, or influence, Baimu has almost no chance of obtaining a Pokémon. Orre also has very few wild Pokémon, forcing most Trainers to rely on expensive imports.
- Baimu belongs to the Quicksand Team as an outer member, or grunt. The organization is preparing to select official members, and successful candidates will receive a Pokémon from an executive.
- He recognizes that joining the team is dangerous and restrictive, but it is his best chance to improve his circumstances. Escape from Pyrite Town is nearly impossible because of the surrounding desert, surveillance, and faction control.
- After work, Baimu socializes with fellow grunts over food and alcohol to avoid standing out. He dislikes much of their behavior, especially extortion, but understands that fitting in is necessary for survival.
- Returning to his decrepit but secure housing on Azure Iridium Street, Baimu waits for a mysterious countdown that began when he awakened in this world.
- When the countdown reaches zero, a “Trainer Life Simulator” activates. It gives him two remaining attempts and allows him to select a birth region, gender, Pokémon, and talents.
- Baimu chooses Kanto, male, and the only available Pokémon option—Random. He receives the fixed talent “Greenhorn,” which slows Pokémon training, and chooses “Hot-Blooded Youth” and “Romantic Luck” from the selectable talents.
- The simulator begins displaying a pixel-art sequence, signaling the start of his first simulated life.
Character Development
- Baimu is established as practical, cautious, and highly adaptable. Though unhappy with his circumstances, he focuses on survival and securing a Pokémon before worrying about long-term goals.
- He possesses a personal moral boundary: he refuses to keep money earned directly through intimidation, even though his regular wages also come from a criminal organization. This reveals both his conscience and the contradictions created by his environment.
- His financial discipline distinguishes him from the other grunts, who quickly spend their wages on drinking and other immediate pleasures.
- Baimu is anxious about the unknown simulator but also hopeful that it may provide the opportunity Orre has denied him.
- His choice of talents shows a willingness to experiment. Because he has two attempts, he prefers testing the system rather than overthinking possible hidden drawbacks.
Significant Themes
- Survival in a hostile society: Pyrite Town offers security only through submission to factions, leaving poor residents with little freedom or opportunity.
- Class inequality and exploitation: Access to Pokémon, education, travel, and a better future is determined largely by wealth and social status.
- Moral compromise: Baimu tries to preserve his principles while working for a criminal group, illustrating how difficult it is to remain morally pure in an oppressive environment.
- Hope and opportunity: The simulator represents Baimu’s first genuine chance to escape his predetermined life and pursue the Trainer journey he once considered impossible.
- Identity and adaptation: As a transmigrator without status or documentation, Baimu must conceal his differences, fit into local society, and gradually build a new identity.
Character Interactions
- Baimu briefly acknowledges a colleague in the break room before showering.
- He eats and drinks with fellow Quicksand Team grunts, listening to their complaints while deliberately acting sociable to avoid isolation.
- His thoughts contrast his own restrained spending and moral hesitation with the other grunts’ drinking, extortion, and inability to save for Pokémon.
- The chapter contains no major direct confrontation, focusing instead on Baimu’s relationship with his environment, coworkers, and the Quicksand Team.
