Green's voice, amplified by magic, rang across the entire Square. People far beyond it heard his murderous declaration and fell silent with fear. They hurried home, terrified of catching the eye of those vicious "blackcoats." But worse was yet to come.
The Anomalies Bureau, City Guard, and Police all wore black uniforms, so ordinary people privately called them blackcoats. Some called them Black Dogs. Neither was meant kindly.
At Green's order, the thousands below him came alive. They shouted in unison, "If they resist, kill them on sight!" Like rabid dogs let loose from their cages, they surged forward, howling and looking for prey.
The training of the Anomalies Bureau and City Guard showed at once. Upon receiving their orders, they found their former colleagues, and the scattered crowd quickly formed neat companies of a hundred. Each had around twenty Transcendents from the Anomalies Bureau and seventy or eighty City Guard soldiers.
Under Green's earlier instructions, three or four such companies would operate together. Even if they encountered a Formal Rank Transcendent, they could surround and kill them without risking a counterattack that wiped out the entire force.
As for who in the city had colluded with the Rebels, there was no need to investigate. Green had already drawn up a list using the intelligence Cyrabelle had left behind.
It was a long list: four Marquises, fourteen Counts, twenty-seven Viscounts, ninety-two Barons, and seventy-four prominent capitalists.
Green had planned to distribute the list in the next day or two. He had not expected someone to try to assassinate him tonight, giving him the perfect chance to act early. Stinnard City was soon in an uproar as Anomalies Bureau agents and City Guard soldiers stormed the grand homes of nobles, officials, and capitalists.
Those powerful figures who usually looked down on
