Many questions rose in Green's mind, and he had a premonition that Tina was far from the only person in this situation. There might even be quite a few others. It seemed he had stumbled into something big again.

At that thought, Green could not help giving the other two young men another look. Both were ordinary people, with nothing unusual about them. As Tina's boyfriend, Wood had little choice but to come along when something like this happened, especially with a treasure worth ten thousand gold pounds involved. As for the hulking Guy, he was Wood's good friend. Claiming to have studied fighting, he had been hired as a bodyguard. Tina and Wood had promised him five hundred gold pounds if they found the treasure.

The reason they had told Green all this without any apparent reserve upon meeting him was not that they were naive. They simply wanted to vent their frustration.

Tina and her two companions had arrived early that morning. Following the clues in the invitation, they had searched the almost abandoned manor all day without finding a thing. Instead, they had ended up covered in dirt and nearly been injured several times. By the time they came out, they were thoroughly exasperated. Seeing Green arrive, they jumped to the obvious conclusion and simply poured out their entire story like beans spilling from a bamboo tube. They could put some extra pressure on this "latecomer" while they were at it. Better still if they scared him off altogether—that would make them feel a little better.

Green was certainly not going to be intimidated by a few words. But now that he had discovered something unusual about Tina, he would not let this lead slip away.
