Background / History

Yan tells Ding Songyan that demonic and Outer Dao practitioners destroyed his family, leaving him its sole survivor. He later entered a sect, cultivated divine arts, and pursued opportunities to avenge his family. On returning home, he renewed his childhood friendship with Zhen Qianfan and helped him obtain the Northern Abyss Fishback Scripture, which enabled Zhen to enter the Law Realm 26.

According to Yan, he was gravely wounded while pursuing a divine object and sought refuge with Zhen. Zhen instead imprisoned him and repeatedly interrogated him about the object’s hiding place. Yan says he betrayed his former sect over the object but refuses to identify the sect or the treasure. Ding treats his account as potentially selective 26. Yan remains in the estate’s secret prison years later, having lost all four limbs 47 50.

Appearance

Yan presents himself in Ding’s Sea of Consciousness as an elegant, lean-faced scholar with graying temples, a Huayang headscarf, and a blue robe. His physical appearance in the prison is similar, but his sleeves and the lower part of his robe hang empty 26 50.

Personality

Yan is composed and patient in his dealings with Ding, offering instruction and a promised reward while withholding details about his sect, treasure, and plans. He openly encourages Ding to test whether he can report the imprisonment, confident that the attempt will demonstrate Ding’s predicament 26 27 32. His composure breaks when Ding Qingyan enters the prison and calls him “Master” 50.

Sea of Consciousness and Qi

Yan sends qi into Ding’s Sea of Consciousness, enabling private communication while Ding continues speaking aloud. A hazy “Seed” associated with this connection influences what Ding can recall or disclose; Yan can also replenish the qi he has supplied 26 32 33.
