Late that night, Yunkui Mountain lay steeped in darkness. Wind swept along the bluestone path, carrying fine grit that tapped against the vermilion corridor pillars.
The neon lights of Chenghui Plateau's main city cast a faint orange glow across the horizon. Where it met the cold moonlight over the mountain, the world below felt strangely distant.
The copper bells hanging beneath the corridor chimed in the wind, but their sound could not dispel the gloom that hung over the mountain gate.
On the roof of Whatever Temple's main hall, three figures huddled together, whispering.
Ye Shunguang approached the other two with a plate of osmanthus cakes.
One was the mischievous Liuyin; the other was Griseo. Belle, the fourth member of their trip to the old mining town, was already sound asleep.
Liuyin picked up a cake and handed another to Griseo. She pursed her lips and said awkwardly, "Griseo, I've already quit my job. You'd better not let me down!"
"Liuyin, how much were you making before?" Griseo took the cake and lowered her gaze. "I'll pay you double, okay? A year in advance."
"Seriously?"
"Of course!"
Griseo did not understand Liuyin's concern... After all, she really was not short of money.
"Griseo, why did you choose Yunkui Mountain?"
Before Liuyin could say more, Ye Shunguang joined the conversation.
She had already asked her junior sister Belle about some of Griseo's secrets. She was curious why Griseo felt so much more goodwill toward Yunkui Mountain than toward the Municipal Government or TOPS.
"Hmm? Yunkui Mountain and Weifei Land feel warmer. Their colors are kinder." Griseo looked up at the sky as she gave her answer.
Ye Shunguang and Liuyin fell silent. Having only just met Griseo, neither of them could fully grasp what she meant.
Above the eaves, moonlight spilled
