Ch. 1Wasteland: Civilization Fortress
Key plot points and events
- Yu Yuan is pulled from an ordinary game into Wasteland: Civilization Fortress after opening a mysterious invitation. He learns that survival is the only goal, death is permanent, and unpredictable disasters threaten players.
- His starting location is the Riot District, and he finds himself in a ransacked dental clinic. The game interface offers combat, survival, social, rankings, and special-event features.
- Yu Yuan discovers that chat messages cost 10 Survival Points, which he does not have. The rankings measure shelters by Civilization Value, and he realizes he is among the newest players.
- Chat messages reveal that newcomers may be vulnerable to raiders after a Beginner Protection Period, while the Riot District is especially dangerous. Soon, gunfire and modified vehicles erupt nearby, confirming the danger firsthand.
- Rather than risk an obvious subway station or parking garage, Yu Yuan searches the sewers for a concealed shelter. He finds an abandoned, multi-level air-raid shelter connected to the sewer but separated from its sewage.
- He claims a hidden chamber as his Hideout. The system builds it, unlocks management functions, and prompts him to name it. He chooses Fish Abyss, his longtime gaming nickname.
Character development
- Yu Yuan begins startled and annoyed, but quickly shifts into practical survival mode. His experience and interest in survival strategy help him assess the interface, recognize the threat, and choose concealment over a more obvious fortified location.
- His brief nervousness at the rankings and warnings gives way to decisive action when violence breaks out nearby.
Character interactions
- Yu Yuan has no direct interaction with other characters. Through the chat channel, he learns how established shelters view newcomers: some discuss raiding them, while others warn that survival is unlikely in the wasteland.
- The distant armed groups—heard but not encountered—make the Riot District’s dangers immediate.
Significant themes
- Survival and vulnerability: Life is finite, and even a brief delay can be dangerous.
- Secrecy and strategic thinking: A hidden refuge may be more valuable than an obvious, heavily defended one.
- Scarce resources and social barriers: Charging for communication limits players’ ability to seek help.
- Civilization amid ruin: The abandoned air-raid shelter becomes a foundation for rebuilding, while the rankings turn that rebuilding into competition.
