Ch. 121Sophie the Rabbit's Gentleman Hat, Wilderness Raiders—Jackal
Plot points and events
- Yu Yuan chooses to upgrade his Magician’s Top Hat into Sophie the Rabbit’s Gentleman Hat, a concealed ring with 30 cubic meters of storage. He uses the extra space to pack an extensive arsenal, medical supplies, and food and water.
- His Bronze-tier Slaughter Card requires him to kill a human of at least Bronze Tier within a week, or die. Unsure how ranks are determined, Yu Yuan reasons that such a target is probably a senior figure in a Thug Faction. A major battle in four days may offer his best opportunity, so he revises his plan.
- The scene shifts to Hanlais Apartments, where the Wilderness Raiders known as Jackal are watching their surroundings. Their leaders suspect a local faction has noticed them.
- Jackal’s Alpha Wolf, strategic adviser Veteran, and intelligence chief Fang discuss their employer, Lawrence, commander of the Black Shield Police Department. Fang suspects Lawrence distrusts his own people and argues they should use his vulnerability to negotiate better payment.
- Alpha Wolf agrees to wait until 10 p.m. for their contact; if no one arrives, the team will withdraw. The Raiders prepare to leave, but Phantom spots someone approaching the entrance.
Character developments and interactions
- Yu Yuan becomes more heavily armed and resolves to adapt his strategy to the dangerous, uncertain Slaughter Card.
- Fang shows herself to be opportunistic and commercially minded, while Veteran assesses the risks and supports her proposal. Alpha Wolf remains cautious and makes the final decision.
- The three Jackal leaders coordinate their judgments and orders; the rest of the team follows them, with the Cubs packing equipment and sentries reporting observations.
Significant themes
- Preparation and survival: Yu Yuan’s expanded storage lets him enter danger better equipped.
- Uncertainty and forced adaptation: The Slaughter Card imposes a lethal deadline without explaining how human ranks are measured.
- Trust and leverage: Jackal suspects Lawrence’s request for protection signals internal conflict, which may give them bargaining power.
- Caution amid looming danger: Both Yu Yuan and Jackal revise their plans in response to threats and incomplete information.
