Power Progression

Background and History

Gu Mingyuan transmigrates into the body of another boy with the same name after a Bone-Shaking Ape kills the original owner in the Star Dou Great Forest. A system grants him three initial talent draws and promises another for each Soul Ring he obtains. He keeps Otherworldly Twin Souls and Tang Sect Secrets ProMax, but immediately transfers his third draw—Yu Xiaogang’s remnant soul—to Huo Yuhao 1 2.

The original Gu Mingyuan had a bone-based Body Martial Soul and had been raised by the Holy Spirit Cult to infiltrate Shrek Academy. His watcher’s death gives the newcomer room to act independently, though the Cult later contacts him and continues to demand intelligence and recruits 2 11 32.

Gu meets Tang Ya and Bei Bei near the forest, obtains their help with his second ring, and enrolls at Shrek. He claims descent from a Star Luo Empire branch of the Tang Sect, demonstrates altered versions of its techniques, and refuses Tang Ya’s invitations to join her sect 5 6 7 9. He later builds a separate Tang Sect group in a South City courtyard, training Cao Jinxuan and Zhou Sichen and recruiting Lin Yan and Jiang Wenzhou 17 29 31 41. Following his tournament victory and fake disappearance, he is elevated to a Holy Son candidate within the Holy Spirit Cult 83 86 94.

His tournament performances also attract the Body Sect and the Star Luo Imperial Family. Lang Ya and Yu Tao attempt to compel him to join the Body Sect, while Emperor Xu Jiawei orders an investigation into his background. Feng Ling supplies a fabricated but well-supported caravan history to conceal his connection to the Cult 70 71.

After entering the Cult’s inner circle, Gu obtains Zhongli Wu’s permission to study Soul Tools in Ming Capital under a new identity and disguise. He chooses Tang Ya as his escort. He regards the move as an opportunity to exploit the Cult’s resources, continue his Soul Tool education, and eventually seize the Snow Empress embryo held in Mingde Hall; Electrolux’s protection means that the Cult’s controlling brand does not restrain him as its leaders believe 87 89.

While in Ming Capital, he develops undead-control techniques, investigates ways to cultivate Demon’s Contract without forcibly consuming souls, and proposes that the Cult support an openly operating sect through a renewed selection of the Seven Great Sects 110 120 126 128 129. He subsequently competes for the Myriad Manifestations Sect as Wan Zhanghan 134 136.

During the upheaval at Mingde Hall, Gu takes the God-Sealing Platform containing the Snow Empress into the Undead Half-Plane. The Ice Empress’s soul also comes to reside in his Sea of Spirit, although the Martial Soul, ring, and Torso Bone she previously gave Huo Yuhao remain with him. Gu and Electrolux eventually establish a contract with the Snow Empress and transform her into a tangible soul spirit 147 152 154.

He later reaches the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well ahead of Huo Yuhao and the reborn Tang San, strengthens his spiritual perception, and collects several medicinal treasures. After a confrontation involving Shrek’s experts, he leaves Sunset Forest rather than prolonging the battle once he has obtained his objectives 160 164 169 170 172 175.

Appearance

Activating the Golden Jade Body gives Gu’s skin a jade-like sheen threaded with flowing gold patterns 1 29.

• Eyes: Flash violet-gold when he uses the Purple Emperor Eyes 14 38.
• Left hand: Bears the dark-purple mark of the Demon’s Contract 1 29.
• Brow: The All-Seeing Heavenly Eye opens at the center of his brow 107 128.
• Soul Rings: Golden Jade Body has two yellow rings, one purple ring, and one black ring after reaching the Soul Ancestor stage. Demon’s Contract later has a red Hundred-Thousand-Year ring, a gray-gold second ring, and an orange-gold third ring 39 99 130 154.

Personality

Gu is composed and tactically cautious, often concealing the extent of his abilities or intentions. He withholds his second Soul Skill’s details after obtaining it, gives Shrek a fabricated explanation for his changed Martial Soul, and uses false orders and paired tracking devices to monitor a Holy Spirit Cult squad 8 9 33.

He invests heavily in capable teammates rather than treating victories as his alone. After defeating Dai Huabin’s team, he acknowledges that Cao and Zhou made the win possible; he also funds their purchases at the Treasure Pavilion 20 45. His dealings with the Cult are more calculating: he uses its resources while resisting its recruitment pressure and steering its attention toward targets of his choosing 32 44.

Personal independence becomes an explicit goal after the Body Sect attempts to claim him. He resolves to acquire enough strength that Shrek, the Body Sect, the Holy Spirit Cult, and even the Deities cannot dictate his future 70. He is also willing to disengage when continued fighting offers little benefit, explaining after the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well confrontation that he has already obtained what he came for 175.

His approach to souls distinguishes his cultivation from the Cult’s coercive practices. When Electrolux proposes using purified souls to develop his second Martial Soul, Gu agrees to release them whether or not they voluntarily leave usable power behind 126. He nevertheless deals forcefully with hostile soul bodies, exploiting his ability to strike them when confronting the Snow Empress and Yu Xiaogang 152 170.

Golden Jade Body and Golden Jade Barrier

Gu’s first Martial Soul is an evolved Body Martial Soul. Its natural durability leads Shrek’s Xuan Zi to classify it as potentially possessing Ultimate Defense 1 23 30.

• Golden Jade Barrier, his first Soul Skill, raises his base defense and strength 7 36.
• His physique withstands heavy physical training and a 3,000-year-old Ironclad Bear’s shock wave 11 35.
• He survives Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong’s Golden Road even though it temporarily seals his Martial Soul and Soul Skills 22 24.
• His bodily strength remains usable when Golden Road suppresses his Soul Power and Soul Skills, allowing him to shatter its golden shell through physical force 22.

• He cannot maximize both attributes at once. Converting nearly all his defense into a punch splits his hand, so he later retains protection around the striking fist’s bones and meridians 36 43.

• Gu can contract its area and concentrate its pressure on a single target 99.

• Strictest Father of the Elements: Permanently halves elemental-attack damage, but does not remove the attacks’ physical force. It helps him withstand Huo Yuhao’s Ultimate Ice and Ma Xiaotao’s flames 34 48 50.
• Douluo's Most Steadfast Materialist Warrior: A gold talent acquired after obtaining Demon’s Contract’s first Soul Ring. His attacks can directly touch and damage nonphysical targets, including Soul Power energy forms, mental entities, souls, remnant souls, and divine consciousness. It applies to punches, kicks, weapons, and other physical attacks, with damage determined by the attack’s own strength 97.
  • He demonstrates it by catching Nana while she is ghostly, striking the spectral Snow Empress, and hitting Yu Xiaogang’s manifested soul body with an ice ball 106 152 170.
• Reborn God King: A red talent drawn after his second Demon’s Contract ring. Gu later refers to having sent it away and recognizes its connection to the reborn Tang San who appeared in Huo Yuhao’s Sea of Spirit 131 172.
• No Such Person: A gold talent that conceals him from distant probing and makes his presence easy to overlook when he suppresses his aura. It does not prevent someone sharing his space from perceiving him face-to-face. He uses it to evade two Class Eight Spiritual Detection Soul Tools while escaping the Mingde Hall ruins 157 159.

Demon’s Contract

Gu’s second Martial Soul manifests as a dark mark on his left hand. He can summon the heavy Sin-Cleaving Scythe, whose power increases against targets responsible for greater harm; summoning it drains his mental strength 2 29.

• The mark draws Electrolux’s damaged divine consciousness to Gu instead of Huo Yuhao 4 12.
• Gu leaves this Martial Soul without a Soul Ring initially, though he later commands beast souls and uses weapons linked to demonic contracts such as the Hand of the Kingkiller 29 94 97.
• Mu En finds darkness and judgment in its aura, but no bloodlust, resentment, or lingering souls 31.
• With the All-Seeing Heavenly Eye, he precisely controls a Grayback Wolf’s remnant soul through spoken commands. He tells the Cult elders that he can maintain this control for three minutes and proposes attempting it on a subdued Hundred-Thousand-Year Beast Soul 94.

Asmodeus’s Dance and Soul Tether

His gray-gold second ring is condensed through the purification and release of captive souls, using source energy they voluntarily leave behind. The process requires him to distinguish soul origins, resentment, and restraining marks rather than indiscriminately absorb them 126 128 129 130.

• Asmodeus’s Dance, also called the Demon Boots, manifests as dark-purple short boots. They improve acceleration, sudden stops, and changes of direction, allowing him to redirect his movement without the usual interruption from momentum 130 131.
• Soul Tether creates invisible Soul Power chains that briefly pull a soul shadow out of the target. Damage to the shadow strikes directly into the target’s soul 131.
• Strong spiritual power can resist or break the chains 131.
• Gu combines Soul Tether with a soul-damaging attack to daze Wang Yanfeng before ending their tournament match 134.

White Demon and Possession

The Snow Empress’s transformation into a soul spirit forms the orange-gold third ring of Demon’s Contract. Electrolux and the Snow Empress contain the origin energy during its formation 152 154.

• Demon Summoning–White Demon summons a powerful demon body with a mode of power circulation different from ordinary cultivation and additional innate racial abilities 154.
• The Snow Empress can possess this body and wield the strength of a rank-ninety-five Hyper Douluo even without releasing its seals 154.
• Possession equips Gu with white demonic armor and enhances his basic physique even before he activates Golden Jade Body.
