Ch. 81They Got Away
Key plot points and events
- The Holy Spirit Cult’s spatial guidance begins pulling Gu Mingyuan away. Electrolux offers to sever the connection, but Gu chooses to let it take him, judging that the Cult’s interest may offer a way out of the conflict between Shrek and the Body Sect.
- As Xuan Zi tries to bring Gu within his protection and Yu Tao breaks through the barrier, Gu vanishes in a Spatial Exchange. A corpse disguised in his Shrek uniform takes his place and detonates in a Corpse Explosion, masking Gu’s disappearance as the passage closes.
- Huo Yuhao’s Spiritual Detection catches a momentary change, and the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm confirms that Gu was replaced by a stand-in. It tells Huo Yuhao that Gu is not dead, but Huo Yuhao keeps this from the others.
- Xuan Zi searches the remains in horror, while Du Busi detects evidence of a sophisticated spatial transfer but cannot trace it. With only bloodied, unidentifiable fragments left, Gu’s fate appears uncertain to everyone else.
- Under Xuan Zi’s questioning, Huo Yuhao claims he could not see clearly and suggests the blast resembled the Corpse Explosion associated with Death’s Hand. Xuan Zi wonders whether an Evil Soul Master had secretly marked Gu.
Character developments and interactions
- Gu Mingyuan makes a calculated, risky choice: he accepts the abduction rather than remain caught between Shrek and the Body Sect. He trusts Electrolux to guard his mind and believes he can resist the Holy Spirit Mark.
- Huo Yuhao becomes complicit in concealing Gu’s survival. Though uneasy, he withholds what he learned—partly because Gu’s departure could let him escape living in Gu’s shadow.
- Xuan Zi is devastated by the apparent loss and urgently seeks an explanation from Huo Yuhao.
- The Sky Dream Ice Silkworm protects Gu’s secret, telling Huo Yuhao the truth but declining to reveal it to the others.
- Du Busi, Lang Ya, and Yu Tao recognize that Gu may have been taken, but cannot determine whether he survived.
Significant themes
- Ambition and self-preservation: Gu chooses danger over returning to an institution he expects to oppose him.
- Deception and uncertainty: The corpse, explosion, and closed passage make survival indistinguishable from death.
- Rivalry and concealed motives: Huo Yuhao’s silence reflects both loyalty to the secret and resentment of Gu’s prominence.
- Power struggles: Gu’s disappearance is shaped by competing factions seeking influence over him.
