The End of the Story

"Let's talk inside," Shen Lantang said. "It must have been a long time since you two last met."

She and Xie Jin led him to the courtyard where they were staying. Once inside, the man moved to kneel, but Xie Jin caught him by the arm.

"There's no need for formalities out here."

"Young master, madam," the man said. "The general received your letter and has set out for Cang'an County with his men. The old general's health isn't good, so he'll need another two or three days to arrive. He sent me ahead to help you both."

"Good. We could use the help."

With business settled, Xie Jin asked, "How is Grandfather?"

"The general is well. He misses you, though, and he's looking forward to meeting your wife."

Shen Lantang smiled.

"That's good," Xie Jin said. "I've been afraid these past few days that we'd worry him. By the way, has Grandfather told my parents about this?"

Seeing that they had more to discuss, Shen Lantang said, "Take your time. I'll ask Madam Zhao to prepare a room."

She walked out. Xie Jin paused, then said, "I'll go take a look too."

When Shen Lantang saw him come out, she asked, "Why did you come out?"

"To let him rest for a while," Xie Jin said calmly.

"Fair enough. He wouldn't be able to relax with you there."

"By the way, who is Brother Wu?"

"He served under Grandfather years ago. Grandfather found him by the roadside, and he stayed with him after that, fighting campaigns across the country. Once, he fell from his horse and injured his leg. After he left the army, he followed Grandfather to Tongxiang."

They talked as they walked. By the time they reached Madam Zhao's courtyard, she had calmed down.
