Background and History

Madam Zhao previously managed the household while her husband ran the family businesses. After his death, she took charge of enterprises spanning cloth production and sales, as well as other shops. Inexperienced in trade, she faced falling earnings and pressure from managers, business partners, and her husband's relatives to surrender control. She refused because she wanted to preserve what her husband had built for their children 149 151 154.

She helped Xie Jin at the County Office, then offered him and Shen Lantang a place to stay while they waited for news from home. She also lent Shen money to repay the people who had cared for the couple after their misfortune 148. When the cloth-shop managers talked over her and challenged her authority, Shen intervened. Madam Zhao subsequently asked Shen to accompany her on a shop inspection and hired her as chief manager 151 152 154 157.

With Shen's help, Madam Zhao dismissed a manager implicated in a dye-purchasing scheme and began placing trusted workers in important positions 156. She personally addressed customers about fabric sold at too high a price, using the occasion to introduce herself as the shop's new owner and rebuild trust. Madam Zhao is gentle and considerate, but initially struggles to confront people who exploit her inexperience. With customers, her warmth becomes an advantage: she invites women to discuss fabrics and fashions directly with her 161.

Her strongest resistance comes when her children are threatened.
