Ch. 21Compensation
Key plot points and events
- Xie Madam anxiously asks where Shen Lantang has been, after the household servants could not find her and Hongwen for half a day. Lantang explains that she took the boy for a walk.
- Nanny Feng says she and the servants were worried. Lantang turns the complaint back on her: if Feng thought the child was in danger, her alarm could make it seem that Lantang had mistreated him. Feng is made to apologize to both Xie Madam and Lantang.
- Once Hongwen has been sent away, Lantang confronts Feng over a more serious matter: she overheard Feng tell the boy that Lantang was pretending to care for him so she could use him and seize his inheritance for her own child.
- Feng denies saying this, but Lantang points out that she had sent away Hongwen’s maids, leaving no witnesses. Lantang condemns her for making a young child fear his stepmother and for undermining the harmony of the Xie family.
- Lantang argues that Feng betrayed Madam Zheng’s dying wish that Hongwen live safely and happily. The chapter ends as Lantang presses Feng to explain whether she simply resents Lantang’s place as mistress of the household and Hongwen’s stepmother.
Character developments
- Shen Lantang reveals a firmer, more principled side beneath her mild manner. She is willing to confront Feng directly, not out of personal spite, but to protect Hongwen and prevent a destructive feud within the family.
- Nanny Feng shifts from outward politeness to visible panic and denial when her private words are exposed. Lantang suggests that her actions may stem from resentment of Lantang’s status.
- Xie Madam realizes Lantang’s motives are broader and more selfless than she had assumed. She is moved by Lantang’s resolve to protect the family’s future.
- Xie Hongwen is not present for the confrontation, but the chapter emphasizes how Feng’s influence has burdened him with fear and mistrust at a young age.
Significant themes
- Family harmony and responsibility: Lantang believes hostility between Hongwen and his stepmother could endanger the entire Xie family.
- The harm of manipulation: Feng’s words risk turning a child against the person caring for him and robbing him of a carefree childhood.
- Duty to the dead and the living: Lantang invokes Madam Zheng’s final wish for her son’s safety, while taking responsibility for his well-being herself.
- Appearances versus character: Lantang’s gentle demeanor masks resolve, while Feng’s apparent loyalty is challenged by her conduct.
Character interactions
- Lantang handles Feng’s initial complaint with controlled courtesy, requiring an apology without open hostility.
- In private, she confronts Feng with specific accusations and challenges her denial, invoking Hongwen’s distress and Madam Zheng’s wishes.
- Xie Madam silently observes the exchange and reassesses Lantang, recognizing that her actions are intended to protect the family rather than advance a personal grudge.
