"If you need anything, Mr. Zhang, please tell me. I'll do everything I can to help."
Seeing Zhang Yang accept the gift,
Lin Cheng let out a sigh of relief.
But Zhang Yang had not taken his business card, which left Lin Cheng even more uneasy. It seemed Zhang Yang really did know a great deal about him.
He would have to be more careful around this man from now on.
"All right, I have things to do. You can go."
With that, Zhang Yang turned and went inside.
After so many years trapped in the same day, he was finally free.
Zhang Yang quickly got ready to go out.
His wife worked at an internet company, where the workload was heavy. If he remembered correctly,
she had worked late the night before and stayed in the employee dormitory.
Over the years, Zhang Yang had often gone to his wife's workplace, but he had never had the chance to spend time with her.
With the end of her shift approaching, he finished getting ready and planned to pick her up.
Ah.
Zhang Yang sighed at the thought.
Luckily, Lin Xiaofei had helped fill the void over the years. Otherwise, those long nights alone would have been unbearable.
"You're going out?"
Zhang Yang was about to leave when Lin Xiaofei's surprised voice came from the living room.
"Yeah. I'm picking Dongxue up from work."
He was about to step out when his eyes suddenly widened.
Surprise flashed across his face.
She's got some nerve.
Dressing like that in front of me—wasn't she afraid I might try something?
Lin Xiaofei wore nothing but a bathrobe. Her hair was still wet, and the morning sunlight streaming through the window made her graceful figure all the more alluring.
"What are you looking at?"
"You look good. A treat for the eyes!"
Zhang Yang smiled, then left without lingering.
Lin Xiaofei gritted her teeth at his words.
Indignation shone in her eyes.
That guy.
He gets an eyeful and still has the nerve to tease me.
But why did he seem different from before?
Zhang Yang had no idea what Lin Xiaofei was thinking.
Once outside, he booked a ride.
He headed straight for his wife's company.
When he arrived, he paid the fare and got out.
Anticipation showed on his face.
It was still early, not yet nine o'clock, so Zhang Yang waited in the parking lot outside the company for Cheng Dongxue to finish work.
He lit a cigarette while he waited.
He savored every puff.
This is great!
I'm finally free of that same day. Being responsible for my own choices feels damn good!
"Dongxue, wait up. How about we get breakfast, then I'll take you home?"
Zhang Yang had not even finished his cigarette
when a deep male voice came from the company entrance.
"No, thanks. My husband is coming to pick me up."
Her cool, lovely voice filled Zhang Yang with warmth.
Before time had begun resetting,
Cheng Dongxue had been the only one working.
Unable to put up with his boss's harassment, Zhang Yang had quit his job and started looking for another.
He had sent out his résumé,
but before he heard back, the same day had begun repeating without end.
He had noticed the contempt in the eyes of those around him.
Thankfully,
his wife had treated him just as she always had, without a trace of disdain.
"Your husband? That useless freeloader?"
The deep voice sounded again.
Zhang Yang narrowed his eyes.
Useless?
He stood, a faint, mocking smile on his face.
"Mr. Yang, we're only colleagues. Please stay out of my personal life."
Cheng Dongxue frowned, her voice turning cold.
"Hmph!"
"How is that live-in son-in-law better than me? I've pursued you for so long and offered you the life you want, and this is what I get?"
Mr. Yang's voice turned cold as well.
"I promise, if you spend today with me, the supervisor position is yours." Yang Qintian frowned, a smug glint in his eyes.
As the company's general manager,
he wielded considerable power.
He refused to believe Cheng Dongxue could keep turning him down.
As he spoke, Yang Qintian even reached out to take Cheng Dongxue's hand.
He had done this sort of thing often enough at the company over the years.
He knew the routine.
Cheng Dongxue had proved harder to win over.
But he was in no hurry. He could take his time.
"You bastard! Keep your hands off her!"
Zhang Yang strode forward. After shouting, he took one last drag of his cigarette and dropped the butt on the ground.
Then he walked over.
"Well, look who it is. The useless husband himself!"
Yang Qintian paused, then smiled faintly.
Zhang Yang had caught him in the act, but he was not worried. The man looked too weak to put up a fight. Besides, he lived off his wife. What was there to fear?
"Oh?"
"Yang Qintian!"
Zhang Yang frowned, his eyes cold.
"Do you really think nobody knows about the rotten things you've done?"
"Others may not know how you got your position, but you do."
The mockery in Zhang Yang's eyes deepened.
"Zhang Yang!"
At the sight of him,
Cheng Dongxue's eyes lit up. She hurried to his side and took his hand, a smile on her face.
"What are you getting at?"
"Keep spouting nonsense and I'll have security throw you out!"
Yang Qintian's face darkened at once.
His eyes turned icy.
"You sent your wife, Cheng Li, to sleep with your boss in exchange for your career. What wouldn't you do?"
"And you'd better get a paternity test. Your son isn't yours."
Zhang Yang frowned, his expression cool.
"You!"
Yang Qintian narrowed his eyes, his gaze icy.
Was this little bastard asking to die?
"Am I wrong?"
"If I catch you harassing my wife again, we'll see which of us gets thrown out of this company!"
Zhang Yang said no more. With a flick of his right wrist,
a silver needle shot out without a sound!
Whoosh!
The needle pierced Yang Qintian's kneecap with ease!
But Zhang Yang's control of his strength
was precise down to the smallest degree.
The injury was slight, but the pain was excruciating!
"Ah!"
Yang Qintian screamed, his face turning pale, then flushed.
He had done those things years ago, before Cheng Dongxue had even joined the company.
"Consider this... a small warning. If there's a next time, don't blame me for what happens!"
Zhang Yang's indifferent voice rang out.
Yang Qintian sucked in a sharp breath.
Who was this guy?
How did he know so much about me?
And how could he do that?
What should I do now?
After turning it over in his mind, Yang Qintian took a deep breath.
This was not the time to act.
Since the bastard knew everything,
he could arrange to have him killed.
Then Cheng Dongxue would be his, and no one else would ever know his secret.
At the thought, Yang Qintian's eyes flickered. Finally, he dialed a number.
"Master Long, I need someone killed. I'll pay five hundred thousand."
Yang Qintian took a deep breath.
Even five hundred thousand
was no small sum for a company executive like him.
But it was worth paying to protect his comfortable life and his standing at the company.
"Zhang Yang, what you did back there was too reckless."
"Yang Qintian is no good. I'm worried he'll retaliate."
Walking beside Zhang Yang, Cheng Dongxue lowered her voice, worry in her eyes.
"I'm not afraid!"
"If you don't want to work, I can support you. And I've got good news."
Zhang Yang smiled and spoke with an air of mystery.
"What good news?"
Cheng Dongxue blinked, looking doubtful.
"Did you find a job?"
"Something like that. I invested some of our money with a friend and made a profit. You won't have to work so hard anymore."
Zhang Yang spoke earnestly, confidence in his eyes.
After all those years, he had gained enough knowledge to shake the world.
Money and status were no longer major concerns for him.
His rise was only a matter of time.
So he needed to give Cheng Dongxue some warning now.
It would save him trouble explaining things later.
"Really?"
"Yeah. You haven't eaten, have you? Let's get breakfast before we go home."
Zhang Yang looked around. They were in the city center, where prices were steep. In the past, when he picked his wife up from work, they always waited until they were near home to eat.
Before long, something caught Zhang Yang's eye.
"Elegant Residence?"
Without hesitation, Zhang Yang took Cheng Dongxue's hand and led her toward it.
If he remembered correctly, it belonged to the Lin Family. It was also one of Qingzhou's largest upscale restaurant chains. Years of marriage and daily life had worn away their youthful edges, and they had never set foot in a place like this.
