Mother-in-Law Insists on Breaking Up the Marriage
Cheng Dongxue did not know whether to feel pleased or angry when she heard that. Strength mattered, but Zhang Yang could not show any. Perhaps divorce was only a matter of time.
"You had money to buy the White Jade Hairpin. Why don't you have any tonight?" Cheng Dongxue could tell Zhang Yang was doing this on purpose.
"Oh, I put that on a credit card. You know how much I have in savings." Zhang Yang spread his hands innocently.
"What..." Yang Lanlan was stunned. A credit card that could cover five hundred thousand? How much money did he have to qualify for that? Even she did not have a card with that kind of limit!
Yang Lanlan furrowed her brows and studied Zhang Yang, from the way he spoke and carried himself to the way he dressed.
His manner was hard to read, but no matter how she looked at his clothes, Zhang Yang did not resemble a bank customer who could get a credit limit above five hundred thousand.
"You're hopeless!" Cheng Dongxue stormed off, too angry to think clearly anymore.
"Xiao Xue, Xiao Xue... Wait, think about it. Really think." Lin Xiaofei was calmer and had already spotted the problem. How could someone with a credit limit of five hundred thousand have no money?
But Cheng Dongxue had already gone back to her room.
"Zhang Yang, you're doing this on purpose. What are you trying to do? Do you want a divorce?" Lin Xiaofei was nearly beside herself with anger. She pointed at his nose as she scolded him.
"Sweetheart, I'm not the one who wants a divorce. Someone else wants us divorced. But don't worry—I'd die before I signed the papers. Xiao Xue is the love of my life." Zhang Yang spoke without the slightest regard for the family still present. "Besides, you know... right?"
"Get lost!" Lin Xiaofei understood what he meant. Even if Zhang Yang got divorced, she could not marry him.
Lin Xiaofei ran off in a fury too, leaving only Zhang Yang and Yang Lanlan at the table.
"Well, they're all gone. What do you want?" Zhang Yang picked up his soup and glanced at Yang Lanlan.
Yang Lanlan looked around the dining room and living room. Seeing no one, she stood with the guilty caution of a thief, tiptoed over to Zhang Yang, and sat beside him.
"Zhang Yang, how did you find out?" Yang Lanlan was not afraid of him. She was afraid of what he knew.
"Be a little nicer to me." Zhang Yang grinned.
"You..." Yang Lanlan had never been treated like this. She flared up and pointed at his nose, but he only grinned back. She had done something wrong, yet on second thought, he might not have proof. Without proof, he would not dare make accusations; he would be held responsible. "Do you have evidence?"
"Evidence of what?" Zhang Yang asked with a sly smile. He picked up his chopsticks and shot Yang Lanlan a commanding look. "Pass me that."
"Zhang Yang, you're only the Cheng Family's son-in-law." Yang Lanlan did not budge. She sneered instead. It seemed he had no evidence after all, so what was there to fear?
"That's right. A son-in-law who married into the family, at that. I get ignored, looked down on, and mocked all the time. Jiang Junlai is an old hand at this, and you're no slouch yourself. Your skills really impressed me."
Zhang Yang was hinting at something else, but only Yang Lanlan knew what he meant.
What does he want? Yang Lanlan's heart skipped a beat. It seemed Zhang Yang really did know something.
"I don't want anything. I just want to warn you to behave yourself. Don't get too big for your boots. You have no reason to feel superior to me."
Zhang Yang sneered, paying no heed to Yang Lanlan's furious face.
"And if I don't?"
"Then I'll make your business public and let everyone have a good look."
"You wouldn't dare!"
"Try me. I have a video too. If you want to see it, I can send it to you anytime."
"You—"
Yang Lanlan was stunned. She had no idea how Zhang Yang could have obtained it, but she was not foolish enough to believe he had a video just because he said so.
"Show me!"
"Oh, you want to check the goods?"
Zhang Yang sneered, found the video on his phone, and handed it to Yang Lanlan.
"Ah, ah, ah... That's so good... So good..."
Yang Lanlan tapped play. Loud cries of pleasure burst from the phone, accompanied by images as explicit as an erotic painting. Stunned, she hurried to turn it off, but the screen locked. Now she could not even delete the video.
Yang Lanlan was on the verge of tears.
Smash!
In her panic, Yang Lanlan suddenly thought to destroy the evidence. Without another thought, she raised the phone and slammed it against the floor. Zhang Yang's phone shattered.
"Heh. It's just a phone. You don't honestly think breaking it makes the video disappear, do you?" Zhang Yang sneered. This girl was so naive it was almost cute.
"Zhang Yang, you're shameless! You—"
"Go ahead and curse me. If insults worked, nobody would ever fight, and we wouldn't need police."
Zhang Yang sneered. The phone had made a loud crash, bound to attract someone's attention. He had no wish to be alone with someone like Yang Lanlan, so he got up to leave.
Yang Lanlan calmed herself. In that instant, several things occurred to her. Zhang Yang had come prepared; that was why he had dared hand her the phone. He had a backup, or had already uploaded the video to the cloud. He was shameless, but what could she do?
Yang Lanlan looked down on Zhang Yang. Even now, she still did. Yet he held evidence of her most embarrassing secret.
She had to get that evidence back, even if she had to kneel to him just this once. Once she had it, she could even have Zhang Yang killed.
But what could she offer that Zhang Yang would want?
She had heard that although Zhang Yang and Cheng Dongxue had been married for years, they were husband and wife in name only. They had never shared a bed.
If she could sleep with Jiang Junlai, she could sleep with Zhang Yang too. She gritted her teeth and decided to go through with it.
Someone suddenly wrapped her arms around Zhang Yang's waist from behind. A strong scent of perfume followed. It was nothing like Cheng Dongxue's faint fragrance; to Zhang Yang, it was so heavy that it stung his nose.
"Just this once. Give me the evidence."
Zhang Yang was stunned by her nerve. Even he and Lin Xiaofei waited until no one was around, yet the house was full of people. Someone could walk in and see them at any moment.
"Hmph. Save it!"
Zhang Yang shook Yang Lanlan off and fled to his room without another word.
Yang Lanlan stared after him. That had failed completely; Zhang Yang was not interested. Besides, she could not compare to Cheng Dongxue.
When Zhang Yang got up again, he was alone in the Cheng Family house. Last night's dinner had felt like a trap—or rather, a public denunciation—and he was still in a foul mood. Lin Xiaofei had gone to school, so he took the chance to rest a little before getting ready to visit his mother, Liu Mei.
What had happened last night had infuriated Cheng Dongxue. After returning to her room, she had not said a word to Zhang Yang, and she had left in such a hurry that morning it seemed she could not bear to see him.
Zhang Yang had no idea what was about to happen next.
