Trapped in the Same Day for a Thousand Years: The Su Family? Looking for Trouble with Me, Li Ruobing?
Welcome to Trapped in the Same Day for a Thousand Years, exclusively produced by Feilu Novel Network. Written by Sang Ze and narrated by Wang Xiaomo and Lao He. In the pharmacy outside the alley, Su Qingying leaned against a window, talking on the phone while stealing glances outside.
The pharmacy was lined with shelves, and signs covered many of its windows. Su Qingying could see the area around the alley entrance, but no one there could see her. She was terribly nervous. She had come to buy contraceptives, but just as she finished and was about to leave, several familiar cars pulled up. Frightened, she immediately ducked back into the pharmacy.
She had thrown her phone out of the car window earlier, so she had to borrow the shop owner's. She had a good memory, and she had seen Wu Chen's number—and that text message—many times. She dialed from memory, though it still took her two wrong attempts to get it right.
"Honey, what should I do?"
"I'm in the pharmacy. I can't get out."
"I'm fine. We're coming down now. Wait for us to get there. Don't worry, I'll handle it."
"Honey, can you really?"
"I'm coming over. It'll be fine. Trust me."
"Okay."
Su Qingying hung up, quickly put on her mask, then returned to the counter. She handed the phone back to the shop owner and thanked her again.
The shop owner looked puzzled. She had no idea what was going on with this young woman, but it had nothing to do with her. She didn't want to ask questions or invite trouble.
In the fifth-floor bedroom overlooking the alley, Wu Chen ended the call and turned to Li Ruobing. "The Su Family has found us. They're outside the alley. Let's go down."
With that, he headed out of the bedroom.
The Su Family had arrived much sooner than Wu Chen had expected, but it wasn't entirely surprising.
He didn't think they had traced the old apartment registered under his parents' names and come looking for him here. If their investigation had started in the wrong direction, they would have needed time to circle back. They couldn't have arrived this quickly.
The Su Family must have tracked that Lamborghini. They had probably called in a favor to access traffic cameras and followed its route here.
"You knew the Su Family would come at this time?"
Li Ruobing followed Wu Chen out of the bedroom, asking as they walked.
"I'm not a god. How could I know?"
Wu Chen picked up his jacket in the living room and put it on. "It was just a possibility. The Su Family might show up this afternoon, or they might not."
"You weren't afraid they'd find you, yet you dared to wait here?"
Li Ruobing asked again.
"You don't need to fish for answers."
Wu Chen smiled at her. "I'll tell you. If you hadn't called me and come looking for me this afternoon, I would've taken Su Qingying out before three—gone for a meal or something. They wouldn't have found us here. But since you came, there was no need for me to leave. Understand?"
Wu Chen smiled again when he finished.
Of course Li Ruobing understood. She already had. She had only wanted to confirm whether this man really was that formidable, or whether some of it had been coincidence.
Now she knew there was no coincidence. Wu Chen hadn't gambled on anything he couldn't control. Even if the Su Family came today, they wouldn't have found Wu Chen and Su Qingying here. But with Li Ruobing present, it no longer mattered.
Why didn't it matter?
Because once Li Ruobing arrived, the Su Family wouldn't find Wu Chen alone with Su Qingying. They would find Wu Chen, Su Qingying, and Li Ruobing together.
That made the situation easy to resolve. The key was Li Ruobing. Trapped in a desperate predicament of her own, she had no choice but to help Wu Chen willingly and smooth things over. She could refuse, of course, but the consequences for her would be too severe.
"Let's go."
Wu Chen picked up the car keys and nodded to Li Ruobing.
Expressionless, Li Ruobing stepped in front of him and straightened his collar. Then she picked up her bag from the sofa, slipped her other hand through his arm, and said, "Let's go."
They changed shoes at the door, then went out arm in arm like a real couple.
This time, it was Li Ruobing's phone that rang.
They paused at the door. Li Ruobing answered. "Boss, a group of people is surrounding Mr. Wu's car." "I know. I'm coming down now."
The call was from one of Li Ruobing's bodyguards.
She hung up after that brief reply.
They headed downstairs.
As they descended, Li Ruobing, her arm linked with Wu Chen's, suddenly said in a low voice, "I don't like this feeling."
"What feeling?"
"The feeling that you've planned for everything, including me. And I can't even resist you. Do you understand?"
Li Ruobing shot Wu Chen a sidelong glance.
"Don't make it sound so ugly."
"How is this plotting against you?"
Wu Chen smiled. "If you hadn't made that bet with me, I never would've dragged you into this. Who can you blame?"
"I'm not blaming anyone. I just don't like the feeling."
"Are you begging me?"
"Begging me not to pull you into my plans again?"
"Do you know how annoying you are?"
"That sounded almost like you were acting cute!"
"Cute, my ass."
Li Ruobing was irritated again and fell silent.
"Will you bet with me again?"
Wu Chen asked her.
"Bet, my ass. If I ever bet with you again, I'm a dog."
Li Ruobing's reply came in a low, rapid burst.
"At least you know yourself."
Wu Chen added.
"You..." Li Ruobing turned to him and narrowed her eyes.
Wu Chen suddenly felt a sharp pain at his waist. Li Ruobing had pinched him. A woman like Li Ruobing had actually pinched him!
She had been driven to the point of using such a childish way to take out her frustration on him.
"Why are you acting like a little girl? Pinching me? Don't tell me you've really fallen for me."
Wu Chen turned and teased her with a grin.
Li Ruobing immediately raised her left hand and slapped the back of her right. Smack! It made quite a sound.
"I couldn't keep my hands to myself. Happy now?" she said.
Wu Chen smiled but said nothing more. He would stop teasing her for now.
They had serious business to handle. Arm in arm, they walked out of the apartment building.
The moment they stepped outside, a faint smile appeared on Li Ruobing's face. She leaned a little closer to Wu Chen, looking delighted to be out with her boyfriend.
They headed toward the alley entrance. Before they reached it, a group of black-clad bodyguards nearby spotted them. Li Ruobing spotted her own bodyguards too, but only four had accompanied her today. The others belonged to the Su Family.
Some of the Su Family's bodyguards were holding photographs. "That's him. Yes, it's him."
They compared the photos with Wu Chen and confirmed he was the man who had taken their young mistress away. One by one, they closed in.
After finding Wu Chen's car, they had called Mrs. Su. She was on her way and had told them to stand guard here.
Their assignment was to watch the car, but now that the man himself had appeared, they certainly couldn't let him leave. "What are you doing?"
"Back off!"
As the Su Family's bodyguards moved in, Li Ruobing's bodyguards rushed over and blocked their path. They pointed at the men and barked at them fiercely. One pulled out his phone to call for backup. Li Ruobing's bodyguards had been waiting in an SUV for her to come out. When they saw the Su Family's men surrounding Mr. Wu's car, they had gotten out to investigate. They had kept watch nearby and called Li Ruobing to report it.
Both sides were well trained and wouldn't start a fight lightly.
Not yet, at least. "Don't make a fuss."
As Li Ruobing spoke, she released Wu Chen's arm and stepped forward. Passing the bodyguard on the phone, she took it from him, ended the call, and handed it back.
She faced the dozen or so Su Family men, her voice cold. "You're with the Su Family, right?"
"What is this supposed to mean?"
"Are you looking for trouble with me, Li Ruobing?"
Li Ruobing had announced who she was at once. A few of the Su Family's bodyguards already recognized her, but now all of them knew.
They exchanged glances. As bodyguards for the Su Family, they knew better than to cause trouble for their employers.
The Su Family wasn't afraid of Li Ruobing, but whether they could afford to offend her wasn't for its bodyguards to decide.
"Ms. Li, we're not here to cause you trouble."
A tall, muscular, bald middle-aged bodyguard stepped forward. His tone was neither servile nor overbearing.
Wu Chen knew him. His name was Yang Kuo, one of Mrs. Su's trusted bodyguards. He also nominally served as deputy head of the Jinfo Group's Security Department, though he rarely handled the Jinfu Group's security affairs. His main responsibility was the Su Family.
He was one of Mrs. Su's confidants—or, to put it bluntly, one of her lackeys.
It was clear that the dozen or so Su Family bodyguards who had come here answered to Yang Kuo.
"Then what are you doing?"
"Blocking my way?"
Li Ruobing sounded furious. She had never been one to put up with this sort of thing.
"Ms. Li, you've misunderstood. We're not here for you. We're here for him."
Yang Kuo pointed at Wu Chen, who stood with one hand in his pocket. "He lured our young mistress away. Were you aware of that?"
"Lured her away?"
"Are you saying my man would lure away another woman?"
Li Ruobing grew even angrier. "Ms. Li, that's not what I meant."
"Then what did you mean?"
"What exactly do you mean by 'lured away'?"
"Well..." The bodyguard faltered.
Yang Kuo was at a loss too. He hadn't been one of the two bodyguards accompanying Su Qingying at the time, so he hadn't seen what happened.
All he had heard afterward was that the young mistress had run off with a man.
The young mistress would never simply run off with a man. That was why he and the other Su Family bodyguards believed the man must have lured her away, though they had no idea how he had deceived her. That was why Yang Kuo had used those words.
"Answer me!"
Li Ruobing glared at him, brows drawn tight. She took another step forward, her presence intimidating.
"Uh... Ms. Li, we still need to investigate the details. But I can confirm that your boyfriend took our young mistress away. So, Ms. Li, you may leave, but he can't."
As Yang Kuo spoke, he fixed Wu Chen with a hostile stare.
Smack! The slap came without warning.
Li Ruobing struck him across the face, then snapped, "You dare detain my man?"
Yang Kuo stumbled back a step. He was stunned, then furious, and nearly struck back. But he restrained himself.
"All of you, get lost!"
Li Ruobing waved them away.
"Ruobing, don't. Calm down. It's just a misunderstanding. There's no need for this."
Someone caught Li Ruobing's arm and stepped up beside her.
It was Wu Chen.
"They're saying that about you, and you're just going to take it?"
Li Ruobing turned to look at him.
"It's a misunderstanding. We can clear it up."
Wu Chen tried to soothe her.
"They came here to grab someone without even finding out what happened, and I'm supposed to explain myself to them? Forget it. Calm down, calm down. Look how angry they've made you."
Wu Chen smiled at Li Ruobing.
Her expression softened at once, and the chill in her eyes faded.
She slipped her arm through Wu Chen's again and turned her head aside. "Fine. Have it your way."
They hadn't rehearsed a word of it, yet their exchange flowed without a hitch. It even left the Su Family's bodyguards bewildered.
A misunderstanding?
What misunderstanding?
Li Ruobing hadn't flown into a rage because she was unreasonable. She was angry because she believed they had misunderstood the situation and falsely accused her boyfriend.
Given Li Ruobing's temperament, such fury made perfect sense if she believed someone had wronged her.
At that moment, Su Qingying could no longer stay hidden in the pharmacy. She had been standing by the window, watching everything outside.
At first, she had thought Li Ruobing would force her way out with Wu Chen, drawing away the Su Family bodyguards as well. But Li Ruobing had gotten so angry that she had even slapped someone. The confrontation had grown so tense that leaving would be difficult.
Wu Chen had stopped Li Ruobing afterward, but Su Qingying couldn't hear what he said to her.
She was still some distance away, and people surrounded them. She was afraid a fight might break out.
"What are you doing?"
Su Qingying came out of the pharmacy, removed her mask, and called out.
"Young mistress!" "Miss, are you all right?"
"Miss?"
The Su Family's bodyguards were startled to see Su Qingying. They all hurried a few steps toward the pharmacy. "Qingying, they came looking for you. They said Wu Chen lured you away and wanted to seize him by force."
Li Ruobing spoke as she and Wu Chen took a few steps toward the pharmacy. Her tone was that of someone talking to a friend, with none of her earlier anger.
She almost sounded as though she were complaining to Su Qingying.
Su Qingying froze. Li Ruobing had called her Qingying and spoken to her in that tone. She understood at once.
The two women were both highly intelligent. They hadn't discussed any of this beforehand, but they understood each other perfectly.
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
Su Qingying swept her gaze over her family's bodyguards, displeasure on her face. "What gives you the right to interfere in matters between my mother and me?"
"Ms. Ruobing invited me out for a chat. How is that luring me away? Can you think before you speak? Can you stop offending people on behalf of the Su Family?"
The bodyguards were stunned again by Su Qingying's rebuke.
Her words weren't especially harsh. She didn't reprimand people the way Li Ruobing did.
But Su Qingying was usually kind to everyone and never spoke sharply to those around her. She had always made allowances for her bodyguards so they wouldn't be put in a difficult position. That was the young mistress they knew.
So even though Su Qingying's tone wasn't particularly fierce, it still felt to them as if she were furious.
Li Ruobing had lost her temper first, and then Su Qingying had appeared and lost hers too. It really did seem to be a misunderstanding.
"Miss, we weren't trying to—Madam told us to..."
The bodyguard Yang Kuo tried to explain.
Making Su Qingying angry in the Su Family was serious. She rarely lost her temper, so when she did, it meant something was badly wrong.
"Do you need to meddle in matters between my mother and me?"
"Is whatever she says automatically right?"
Su Qingying didn't even let him finish before firing back.
The dozen or so Su Family bodyguards were frightened into silence. They didn't even dare meet her eyes.
The better someone's temper, the scarier it was when they finally lost it.
And though seven-tenths of Su Qingying's anger was an act, the other three-tenths was real.
Her mother could never have kept such a tight hold on her alone.
It was these bodyguards, who obeyed her mother, who helped keep her under control. They reported even the smallest things to her.
Today, Su Qingying had stopped holding back. She truly wanted to lose her temper.
At the intersection in the distance, a convoy was rapidly approaching the mouth of the alley: six or seven black Mercedes-Benzes.
Wu Chen noticed it first and turned to look. Li Ruobing, who had been watching him, followed his gaze. Then everyone else noticed it too. It was the Su Family's convoy. Madam Su had arrived.
