The inspector stared at him, then finally gave an almost imperceptible nod.
That swordsmanship had clearly been honed through countless hours of practice. There was no faking it.
He withdrew his assessing gaze, stamped the document, and handed back a temporary identification card.
"This is a temporary residence permit, valid for one year. If you still want to stay in Kumogakure after that, or wish to renew it, go to the relevant department in the Raikage Building."
"Remember to follow Kumogakure's rules while you're here, Mr. Samurai."
"Of course. Thank you."
Kakashi took the card, slipped it into his robe, and gave a slight nod. Then, with his sword at his hip, he strode through the gates of Kumogakure.
Once inside, Kakashi appeared to wander aimlessly. In truth, he was keenly observing the village's layout, its crowds, its everyday atmosphere, and any potential watchers.
He needed an identity that would explain his presence while allowing him to move about freely without arousing suspicion.
A tourist or temporary resident would have limited freedom of movement. Opening a shop would mean running a fixed business and managing complicated relationships. Neither was ideal.
As he considered his options, his gaze passed over a modest but lively street. A shop sign caught his eye.
"Mouri Odd Jobs Shop"
The lettering was casual and somewhat faded. The shop was small, and a handwritten note was taped to its glass window: "All kinds of jobs accepted. Fair prices."
"Odd Jobs Shop?" Kakashi paused. He had never seen a business with a name like that in Konoha, or in any other ninja village he knew of.
Some kind of agency that takes on anything? It might be an opportunity.
