Boruto tried to hide that he could see the black shadow, but he attacked it when it reached for Sarada in the cafeteria. The shadow escaped, and Boruto’s Rasengan destroyed the serving well and drenched Sarada and the other students in food.
After Boruto’s Rasengan wrecked the cafeteria while he tried to protect Sarada from a dark figure, Iruka reprimanded him and Naruto took him home. Naruto gently asked whether Boruto had really been seeing a dark figure, but Boruto hesitated to tell him what he had seen.
Boruto hid his vision of a dangerous black shadow from Naruto and sought help from Sasuke, hoping the Rinnegan could reveal it. After apologizing to Sarada, he learned Sasuke and Sakura were away for several days, leaving him unsure how to protect anyone before Sumire appeared.
Sumire Kakei told Boruto that old records described Root experiments whose unseen byproducts fed on Chakra, and they agreed to investigate Konoha’s Confidential Archives Room. After the Canopy Screen showed their meeting, Naruto wondered why his future self could not convince Boruto.
Jiraiya explained to Naruto how the Hokage’s duties could leave Boruto feeling neglected and burdened by his father’s status. The next morning, Naruto felt relieved when Boruto seemed cheerful again, though he still faced the challenge of balancing his responsibilities with fatherhood.
Boruto tried to bribe Kizaru with his father’s expensive cigars so he and Sumire Kakei could enter Konoha’s secret Archives Room. Kizaru initially refused, but after Boruto pleaded, he pocketed a few cigars, leaving his decision about letting them in unresolved.
Boruto and Sumire Kakei entered the Confidential Archives Room after Kizaru covertly made its keys accessible. Sumire found a Root dossier and sent Boruto to watch the entrance while she searched the records.
Sumire secretly searched Konoha’s Archives Room and told Boruto that the records linked the black shadow to Nue and warned of a full-moon threat. After sending Boruto away with the key, she reported the Owl project files to her father through an encrypted Communicator.
Sumire Kakei agreed to her father's plan to release Nue and escape Konoha, despite worrying about Boruto and the danger to others. As she prepared to leave, Boruto encountered Shikadai and Inojin, whose remarks about a trusted companion being a hidden enemy made him freeze.
Boruto realized Sumire Kakei might be behind the dark shadow and confronted her at the training ground. Sumire summoned Nue and warned Boruto to flee, but he refused to move.
Kizaru badly wounded Nue, and Boruto repeatedly stopped Sumire Kakei from killing herself after her plan was exposed. As Sai and the ANBU surrounded the training ground, Boruto’s bloodied hand prevented Sumire from stabbing herself, leaving her slumped and defeated.
Boruto persuaded Sumire to abandon her mission, but Sai arrested both of them. Sai then briefed Naruto and the village leaders on Sumire’s plot, while the mastermind behind her actions remained unknown.
Sai identified Shinraku Raccoon as the prime suspect in the incident and likely Sumire Kakei’s biological father, while the meeting confronted the village’s past and Boruto’s legal responsibility. Naruto stopped Sumire’s coercive interrogations, took responsibility for failing Boruto, and arranged house arrest for Sumire as the investigation continued.
