Gaara said nothing. He only stared blankly at Naruto, whose face was streaked with tears. His eyes were hollow and lost.
Naruto looked into Gaara's lifeless eyes, his voice choked with emotion. "I was just like you. I suffered, and I was lonely."
"When I was little, no one wanted anything to do with me. I did plenty of ridiculous things just to get people to notice me."
Remembering his lonely childhood, Naruto could not stop his tears from falling again.
Gaara, barely alive, watched Naruto cry. Weak all over, he struggled to speak. "If you suffered like I did, why do you still protect the people who hurt you?"
Naruto pushed down his surging emotions, his gaze turning resolute. "Now I have friends who truly accept me."
"I want to protect them, and I want more people to accept me. But you keep hurting my friends."
"That's why I have to stop you. If you still refuse to change and insist on destroying Konoha and hurting my friends, I'll kill you myself."
Naruto stared fiercely at Gaara on the ground.
Just then!
Sasuke arrived on the battlefield. Chidori gathered in his right hand, lightning crackling as he prepared to deal the dying Gaara a fatal blow.
"Sasuke! Stop!" Naruto shouted.
Sasuke froze, Chidori suspended in midair. He turned to Naruto and demanded in bewilderment, "He's determined to destroy Konoha! He nearly got us all killed just now. Letting him live is asking for trouble!"
Before Sasuke could finish, Naruto said firmly, "He won't do it again. Let him go."
Sasuke wanted to argue...
But faced with Naruto's unyielding gaze, he finally let the Chidori in his palm dissipate.
Sasuke gave a cold snort and walked over to Naruto. "Have it your way. You'd better not regret it."
It was some time before Temari and Kankuro came rushing over.
They hurried forward and carefully helped Gaara up. He was covered in wounds, his breathing faint.
Before leaving, Gaara looked deeply at Naruto, who lay unconscious on the ground.
Then he turned to his sister and brother beside him and murmured two words in a weak, hoarse voice. "Thank you."
Temari and Kankuro froze.
Their younger brother had always been cold and ruthless. He had never thanked anyone before. Those two simple words stirred a tangle of emotions in them both.
The images cut rapidly from scene to scene.
Time flew by. The boy who had once been filled with hostility had become the Kazekage of Sunagakure.
War erupted over Sunagakure as Deidara of the Akatsuki launched an all-out attack.
To protect everyone in the village, Gaara drew on the full power of his Sand Release. He spread a vast canopy of sand over all of Sunagakure and took the full force of Deidara's devastating bomb himself.
The explosion sent smoke and dust billowing into the air. Gravely wounded, Gaara fell from the sky and was snatched away by a giant bird Deidara had made from clay.
The scene abruptly changed.
The atmosphere was heavy with grief.
On the Light Screen, the One-Tail was forcibly extracted from Gaara's body. He lay on the ground, utterly lifeless.
Seeing it with his own eyes, Naruto broke down completely. He sobbed and shouted at the people around him, "It's all your fault! You killed Gaara!"
Sakura stepped forward to comfort him, but Naruto cut her off with an angry shout. "You're all murderers!"
"Did anyone ever ask if he wanted to be a Jinchūriki? Why did Gaara have to bear all that suffering alone? Why?"
Moved by Naruto's grief and sincerity, Elder Chiyo resolved to use the forbidden One's Own Life Reincarnation, trading her life for Gaara's.
But Chiyo was old, and her own Chakra was not enough to sustain the forbidden technique.
Naruto immediately stepped forward and poured his immense Chakra into Gaara without pause, helping Chiyo bear the technique's enormous cost.
The images continued to flash past.
In a pitch-black void within his mind, Gaara huddled alone in a corner, weeping silently, lost in despair.
Suddenly, a hand rested gently on his shoulder. Gaara spun around and saw Naruto's familiar, warm smile.
Gaara jolted awake. In the real world, Naruto was right beside him.
The scene changed once more
to a battlefield of the Impure World Reincarnation.
Gaara fought Rasa, who had been brought back by the Impure World Reincarnation. After a hard battle, Rasa was defeated.
Rasa looked at Gaara, his eyes red with regret and guilt. His voice was hoarse. "I was stubborn and obsessive my whole life, beyond saving. Yet I was blessed with a son as remarkable as you.
"I suppose I can leave this world in peace. Perhaps I don't even deserve to hear you call me your father. I leave Sunagakure in your hands."
Gaara's expression remained calm. He gave a slight nod and was about to use Sealing Jutsu.
Rasa looked at him and revealed the truth he had kept buried for years. "And your mother loved you from beginning to end."
Those words untied a knot Gaara had carried for half his life. Years of pent-up hurt melted away, and tears slowly ran down his cheeks.
Gaara answered softly, "Rest easy. I'll protect the village."
With that, Gaara raised his hands, formed the Hand Seals, and sealed Rasa away.
The image on the Light Screen above froze, then slowly faded.
