History

When a vast opening appears in the sky, Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze orders Konoha’s senior officials to assemble and its residents to prepare for evacuation. After the voice from the opening promises to show future events, he orders every department to record what appears so the village can prepare 1.

The broadcasts expose painful possible futures for Konoha. Villagers abuse and ostracize the orphaned Naruto Uzumaki, while Sakumo Hatake is condemned for abandoning a mission to save his comrades. The revelations prompt Hiruzen Sarutobi and other leaders to confront the village’s treatment of children and its past failures 9 13 15 16. Hiruzen calls for a campaign against blaming children for their parents’ actions and proposes a daily free rice ball for each orphan in the slums, with support from the Uchiha and Hyuga clans 16.

After seeing a future in which Minato and Kushina die protecting Naruto, Minato chooses to leave Konoha with Kushina and put their family first. Hiruzen accepts his decision and says the village will welcome them back. Minato, in turn, promises to help if Konoha faces a crisis 33 36.

Role in the Story

• Revealed future: The Light Screen shows both Naruto’s mistreatment within Konoha and a later confrontation in which shinobi associated with the Leaf try to stop him from destroying the world 3 15 16.
• Target of rival villages: Raikage A rallies Kumogakure for a future war against Konoha. Sunagakure’s leaders also debate whether to pursue figures shown in the broadcasts or cooperate with the village 24 37.
• Potential center of an alliance: Ōnoki sends Kitsuchi and Kurotsuchi to Konoha as he prepares Iwagakure for a powerful future threat 31. A later vision shows the Five Kage gathering there as the Black Armor Cavalry approaches the Land of Fire 30.
• Threatened by Obito’s revised plan: After the broadcasts expose his original plans, Obito and Black Zetsu consider using Kirigakure to attack Konoha and abduct Sasuke amid the fighting 35.
