Background / History

Tang San lives with his father, Tang Hao, in Shenghun Village. Shortly after Tang San’s awakening, Tang Hao returns home injured from a confrontation with Jiang Hao’s guardian. Tang San questions his father’s account but stops when Tang Hao makes clear he will say no more 4.

At Notting Academy, Tang San becomes Yu Xiaogang’s disciple. His first encounters with Jiang Hao and Xiao Wu are strained: he feels hostility toward Jiang Hao and resents Xiao Wu’s closeness with him. After obtaining his first Soul Ring, Tang San challenges Jiang Hao to a public Spirit Fight over Xiao Wu. Jiang Hao defeats and badly burns him; Tang San’s collapse becomes a source of public humiliation 5 6 7 16 17 18 19.

Tang San subsequently tries to kill Jiang Hao with a poisoned hidden needle, but Jiang Hao catches it. Tang San and Yu Xiaogang leave Notting Academy, and six years later Tang San is at Shrek Academy. When Jiang Hao arrives to apply, Tang San brings Zhao Wuji to confront him over their past conflict 20 22 25 27.

Personality

Tang San is protective of his father and fiercely loyal to Yu Xiaogang, whom he defends against Xiao Wu’s insults. He initially restrains his irritation around Jiang Hao, but his jealousy over Xiao Wu turns into an openly possessive challenge 4 7 17.

His defeat deepens that hostility. Rather than accept the result of their fight, he demands a rematch, then attempts a surprise assassination. At Shrek, he conceals his history with Jiang Hao from Dai Mubai while accepting Dai’s offer to help oppose him 19 20 26.
