Near Lanshan Hospital, Gongshu District, Ninghang City.
Several officers from the Public Security Bureau were on duty there.
"Ahh..." Liu Qian yawned and asked a middle-aged officer beside her, "Wang, I'm going to get some late-night food. What do you want?"
"A bowl of beef offal."
"Beef offal? After what we've seen these past few days, you can still eat that?"
"You don't get it. The best way to overcome fear is to face it."
"Fine. What about the rest of you?"
"Just get me a bowl of ramen."
"..."
Liu Qian headed for the food street on the next block. After buying everyone's food, she started back the way she had come.
But as she passed a warehouse, she heard someone pounding on its door.
"Huh?"
She froze and looked toward the warehouse.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The heavy blows rang out in the quiet night, making Liu Qian's legs go weak.
She snatched up her radio. "Wang, something's happening over here! Get here, quick!"
Then she tried to put some distance between herself and the warehouse.
She had barely taken two steps when...
Boom!
The warehouse doors burst open, and several hideous zombies lunged straight at her, claws outstretched!
"Ah! Why is it always me?"
Liu Qian screamed and ran.
But the zombies were faster than she had imagined, moving well beyond the limits of any human body. They closed in at a terrifying pace.
"No... stay away!"
Tears streamed down her face as she ran for her life.
She had joined the Ninghang City Public Security Bureau less than a month ago. How had she already run into one supernatural incident after another?
The world had it in for her!
Just as the zombies were about to catch her, a figure glowing gold appeared ahead.
"Is that..."
Before Liu Qian could even smile with relief, the figure shot toward the pursuing zombies like a bolt of lightning.
In the blink of an eye, the zombies were torn apart, their pieces scattered across the ground.
"She's... she's incredible!"
Liu Qian stared at the female knight nearby, unable to stop herself from marveling.
Her aunt was an official at the Investigation Bureau, so Liu Qian had met a few people with supernatural abilities. She knew a little about them.
But the knight's strength far surpassed that of an ordinary Investigator!
Even a mid-level Investigator would have struggled to end the fight so quickly and cleanly!
While Liu Qian's attention was fixed on Xilin, a frantic voice burst from her radio:
"Liu Qian! We've got trouble! Notify the bureau, now!"
"Wang? What happened?!"
"Damn it... the bodies... they've come back to life!"
"The bodies came back to life?"
Liu Qian's heart tightened. It had to be connected to the zombies that had chased her.
She hurriedly pulled out her phone and contacted the Public Security Bureau.
But backup could not possibly arrive in time, and her colleagues might die at any moment. She summoned her courage and called to the knight:
"Please! Could you... help us? There are still officers trapped by those zombies inside Lanshan Hospital! I'm begging you..."
"All right," Xilin replied softly.
Then she leaped lightly from the street straight up to the hospital's second floor.
Meanwhile, the other officers were trapped inside an operating room, surrounded by zombies.
"Damn it! Wang, think of something!"
"I can't! They're too fast to land a clean headshot!"
"Zombie movies are a lie! These things are faster than champion sprinters, and they don't even get tired!"
"We can't let them out of Lanshan Hospital!"
"Don't worry. I had Xiao Chen lock the main doors. They can't get out!"
"We just have to hold on until the bureau sends someone, and then..."
Raaagh!
As the officers fought to hold the operating room doors shut, the zombies outside suddenly roared.
But within seconds, every sound vanished, leaving dead silence.
"What happened?"
The officers exchanged bewildered looks.
"Should we... take a look?"
"Maybe not?"
"It's too dark out there. I'm kind of scared..."
Bang!!
Before they could decide, the operating room doors were pushed open.
They all raised their guns, then stared in surprise. It was not a zombie at the door, but a knight in armor!
Behind her, the zombies outside the operating room lay in pools of blood, their heads severed.
"The zombies are dead?"
"Thank goodness! We're saved!"
"Thank you so much!"
"You really saved us!"
"Wait, aren't you the one from last night..."
One officer recognized her as the mysterious knight who had killed Xu Yan the night before.
"Are there any more zombies in the hospital?" Xilin asked.
"No. All the bodies we found were here."
Once Xilin was sure no zombies remained in the hospital, she turned and left without lingering.
The officers looked at one another, then let out long breaths of relief. Smiles spread across their faces.
They were alive!
"Only nineteen zombies..."
Bai Xuan stood atop a tall building across from the private hospital. A glance at the mission list showed that Xilin had killed only nineteen zombies. The mission was not complete.
Still, since Xilin had cleared the hospital, he could no longer sense the presence of any undead inside.
Then...
Bai Xuan scanned the surrounding area.
If the mission required twenty zombie kills, there had to be at least twenty in the area.
And whoever had created the zombies had yet to show themselves.
"Hm?"
Bai Xuan suddenly spotted two figures on another tall building nearby. Like him, they were watching the private hospital.
"There you are."
"Damn it! My entire experiment is ruined!"
On the rooftop, a male doctor in a white coat clutched his right eye and stamped his foot in fury.
To advance his experiment, he had been observing the area around the hospital in secret for some time. He had even deliberately leaked information to lead the officers to the bodies.
He had planned to use the officers to test his zombies' fighting strength.
He had not expected a female knight to ruin everything!
"It's all that bitch Xu Yan's fault!"
The doctor gnashed his teeth and kicked the hulking zombie behind him.
"I told her to lie low and stay out of trouble! And look what happened!" Growing angrier with every word, he stamped hard on the ground. "Useless ghoul!"
"Pah!"
"Let's go, Bruce."
The doctor was about to leave when an invisible sword arc swept past!
Crack! The arm he had kept pressed over his right eye was severed on the spot, revealing an eye already infected by the virus and glowing an eerie bloodred.
"Damn it!"
Holding the bleeding stump, the doctor fought through the pain and looked up in panic. Two figures had appeared at the entrance to the stairwell without his noticing.
"Damn it! Bruce!" he shouted to the enhanced zombie beside him. "Kill them..."
Before he could finish, another sword arc flashed past.
The hulking zombie's head hit the ground...
