Ch. 101Forcing the Circle
Chapter Summary: “Forcing the Circle”
Key plot points and events
- The heroes attack Chu Men inside the Greenhouse, but his force field defeats every attempt: Diana’s broken dagger barely cuts it, J’onn is repelled and burned, Victor’s plasma blast is absorbed, and Doctor Fate’s magic circle is shattered.
- Clark charges Chu Men, only to be struck aside and driven through the floor. Meanwhile, the sixty-second countdown ends, Luthor regains control, and more than three hundred Biochemical Infantry and eight Bio-Tyrants surround the Greenhouse.
- With escape impossible, Bruce orders the team to “force the circle through”—a last-ditch attempt to banish Chu Men into a dimensional rift.
- Doctor Fate creates a six-pointed circle. Clark, Barry, J’onn, Diana, and Victor each channel their distinct powers into one of its five nodes, while Fate binds their energies together from the sixth.
- The circle opens a black rift and begins pulling Chu Men out of reality. His confidence finally gives way to seriousness as he feels the force taking hold.
Character developments
- Bruce remains tactical under extreme pressure, shifting immediately from failed attacks to a desperate collective plan.
- Barry struggles against fear and the physical burden of using the Speed Force, but pushes through to contribute.
- Diana persists despite injury, repeatedly attacking the barrier and then supplying her power to the circle.
- J’onn risks serious injury trying to bypass the force field, then channels his Martian Will into the ritual.
- Clark is badly hurt but recovers quickly enough to return and power the circle.
- Victor discovers Luthor has overwritten the backdoor code, leaving the group trapped, but uses his Mother Box to connect their energies.
- Chu Men begins the fight wholly dismissive of the heroes; the rift’s pull is the first sign that their combined effort may genuinely threaten him.
Significant themes
- Unity across differences: The circle works by combining powers that are individually distinct and otherwise ineffective against Chu Men.
- Courage under pressure: The heroes continue despite injury, fear, and overwhelming odds.
- Arrogance and uncertainty: Chu Men’s mockery persists until the ritual begins to affect him, raising the possibility that his confidence may be misplaced.
- Last-resort sacrifice: The team acts with no clear escape route, accepting grave danger in hopes of stopping him.
Character interactions
- Bruce directs the team and calls for the circle when their attacks fail and reinforcements close in.
- Doctor Fate coordinates the ritual, while the others each take a node and contribute their power.
- Chu Men taunts the heroes as they build the circle, daring them to continue; his reaction changes once the rift begins to pull at him.
