Once the seat of Earth's greatest defenders, this temple floating in silent orbit now felt heavy with gloom.

In the command center, Batman, Bruce Wayne, stood before a massive holographic screen. Complex data and energy spectra raced across it: trace readings from the Boom Tube Link had used to leave.

Ever since Link had defeated and imprisoned him in utterly humiliating fashion, Batman had become almost obsessive. Using what access he had left, he analyzed everything he could about Link day and night, searching for the slightest weakness in powers he could not understand.

His eyes were bloodshot, blue-black stubble covered his chin, and exhaustion had hollowed out his face. Yet behind his tactical mask, his gaze was sharper than ever, like a lone wolf driven into a corner.

Superman's death. The Justice League's defeat. Earth ruled by a tyrant. Each was a poisoned thorn lodged deep in his soul.

Not far behind him, Wonder Woman, Diana Prince, had just finished training. She had fought the highest-grade Combat Robots barehanded. Machines built from alloys strong enough to tear tanks apart had been smashed into scrap beneath her blows, each one charged with Olympian Power.

But there was no joy in her victory, only worry she could not shake.
